Academic Competition Newsletter Vol. VI issue 6 editors: Eric Owens and Gaius Stern Mar. 2000 Welcome to the sixth issue of the sixth year of the Academic Competition Newsletter. The primary mission of the newsletter is to spread information about QB to new players and schools. To get a free subscription (or drop it), just write the editors and ask to be (un)subscribed. When posting questions or gripes, however, please write only to the editors and not to the entire subscription list. The newsletter will endeavor to report fully on all QB events for teams West of the Mississippi or of interest to those teams, continuing the earlier policy to extend coverage towards the Midwest. As always, subscribers are encouraged to write the newsletter editors with columns, tournament invitations, opinions, corrections, and especially tournament results. STANFORD WINS ACF WEST The West Coast ACF Regional was held February 26, 2000 at Caltech. The tournament field consisted of 14 teams. The plan was to play a complete 13-round robin, followed by a playoff round robin. After the initial round robin, these were the standings: Stanford 13 0 Silicon (S)Age 11 2 UCLA A 11 2 Berkeley 10 3 USC 8 5 Arizona State 8 5 Occidental Col. 8 5 UC Irvine B 6 7 UCSB A 4 9 UC Irvine A 3 10 Harvey Mudd 3 10 UCLA C 3 10 UCLA B 3 10 UCSB B 0 13 The top 4 teams were to play each other again. In the first round of that playoff, Stanford beat UCLA while Berkeley beat Silicon (S)Age. Stanford thus clinched the tournament, being ahead by 3 games with 2 games remaining. Since they had a plane to catch, and everyone was exhausted and eager to play some TRASH, the tournament was called. Congratulations to Stanford (Prasun Ray, Kenny E., Elliot Mandel, and Mark) for going undefeated. Silicon (S)Age (Chris Mayfield, Chad Kubicek, and Matt Bruce) lost to Stanford and Berkeley in the round robin, then to Berkeley again in the aborted mini-RR. UCLA lost to Stanford and Silicon (S)Age, then to Stanford again. Berkeley lost to Stanford, UCLA, and ASU. UCLA, Berkeley, and Silicon (S)Age all finished with 3 losses in a tie for 2nd. Top scorers: Patrick UCLA A 70.77 Mike Berkeley 61.54 Joe W USC 46.92 Wesley Oxy 46.54 Prasun Stanford 46.54 OKLAHOMA WINS ACF SOUTH Because of the low turnout -- five teams -- we were able to hold a triple round-robin, and since the teams present were all "A" teams, the matches were all very competitive.
