Academic Competition Newsletter Vol. VI issue 7 editors: Eric Owens and Gaius Stern Apr. 2000 Welcome to the seventh issue of the sixth year of the Academic Competition Newsletter. The primary mission of the newsletter is to spread information about QB to new players and schools. To get a free subscription (or drop it), just write the editors and ask to be (un)subscribed. When posting questions or gripes, however, please write only to the editors and not to the entire subscription list. The newsletter will endeavor to report fully on all QB events for teams West of the Mississippi or of interest to those teams, continuing the earlier policy to extend coverage towards the Midwest. As always, subscribers are encouraged to write the newsletter editors with columns, tournament invitations, opinions, corrections, and especially tournament results. CA Quizbowl is finally picking up steam in the SF Bay area for High School players. Last year there were only three events: Stanford's Fall HS Cardinal Classic, Berkeley's Cal Classic IV (March), and the pitifully bad BAAC at Washington HS in Fremont. This year there has been a substantial change for the better, despite Stanford's near collapse as a club and the indefinite postponement of the HS Cardinal. To start the year off, Berkeley ran a Bear Cub Classic for new teams. This inspired Bentley HS to start their own Bentley Bowl, which was put on with the help of NAQT and the Berkeley club. A few weeks after this, Archbishop Riordan in SF also put on an NAQT HS event. This was followed by the San Ramon Wolfpack Classic which drew 14 teams, including the Charles Wright Academy from Tacoma, Washington. This was the biggest event so far this year, notwithstanding the fact that it was held on the same day as the BAAC, which suffered a severe loss of turnout, accordingly. The best is yet to come. Cal Classic V will be held in mid-April and hopes to break last year's record 18 team turnout. In addition, local powerhouse Mission San Jose HS plans to run an event in May to end the season. So there will be six real tournaments this year, not counting BAAC. At the same time, a Latin Bowl circuit is growing and Latin teams are offered the chance to play QB as well. The result could be an increase of participation by 50% again. The sudden growth of the Bay area circuit is a good sign that No. California can soon hope to catch up to the LA basin area, where QB is far more established. It just took a consolidation of four very enthusiastic coaches to build a circuit. ------------------------- BYU POSTPONES PM7 The BYU program is searching for a new date for Perpetual Motion VII. If your team might be interested in attending the oldest tournament in the Rockies, please write Earl Cahill and Ken Jennings . ------------------------ CA TOURNAMENT CALENDAR MIDDLE HEAVY The CA circuit is now a full fledged circuit with well over eight events a year. In Fall, there are typically three or even four events stretched over at maximum five weekends, but more often three or four weeks running. After Thanksgiving there is a lull until late January when the season explodes with six events back to back, and then a lull again. Perhaps it would be better for the sake of everyone's schedules to stretch the playing season out a little at both ends. Normally Cal-Berkeley opens the season in late Oct. or early Nov. with the WIT. Perhaps some south CA school is interested in starting a juniorbird event in early or mid October - preferably with a one week lull before Cal Classic. (Did UC-I do this in 1999? how did it go?) Furthermore, in winter, it might be prudent to transfer one or two events from the February crush into March so as to give everyone a one week breather. If the pace of Stanford and all three Regionals may be unavoidable, perhaps a one week break at the end of January should be considered for the sake of regeneration. Compared to February, March looked positively empty by comparision. Some years West Coast ACF Regionals were deliberately postponed a week into early March to give people a week off. Maybe this practice could be renewed. By looking at the 2000 Winter calendar, one can see why this might be desireable: 1/22 UCI Baby Anteater (high school) tournament 1/29 UCR Scrimmage 2/4-5 Stanford Cardinal Classic 2/5 USC NAQT (high school) tournament 2/11-12 Berkeley NAQT Sectionals 2/18-19 CBI Regionals in San Diego 2/19 UCR Jr Bird/HS Bowl 2/25-26 Caltech ACF Regionals If you have comments, a scheduled West Coast event, or even a gripe to make public, please contact Willie Chen , who has graciously agreed to be a calendar coordinator for the West Coast. ---------------------------------- NAQT SEEKS 2000-2001 HOSTS National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC, is pleased to announce that it is now accepting bids from colleges to host Sectional Championship Tournaments (SCTs) and the Intercollegiate Championship Tournament (ICT) in the 2000-2001 competition year.
