Academic Competition Newsletter Volume VII, issue 6 February 2001 Welcome to the February edition of the ACN. The objective of the ACN is to provide new and established QB programs with information of all aspects on the sport of Quiz-bowl. The newsletter will endeavor to report fully on all QB events for teams West of the Mississippi or of interest to those teams, continuing the earlier policy to extend coverage towards the Midwest. Subscriptions are free and can be made for individuals or club mailing lists. Simply drop a note to the editors Gaius Stern or Eric Owens with the word "subscribe ACN" in the subject header. Likewise, to drop a subscription simply write the editors. Next month we hope to bring you some word on two or three buzzer companies which have recently come to our attention. Also an interview with R, Hentzel of NAQT, and of course a review of recent contests. This Month: Results Minnesota Junior Bird ACF Southwest ACF West ACF Midwest Announcements UC Riverside Carleton Undergraduate Tournament Calendar --------- WISCONSIN WINS MINNESOTA JR BIRD from David Levinson Congratulations to Wisconsin for winning the 2nd year in a row. Teams played a full round robin, they were then broken into two brackets (top four teams in top bracket) and played a mini-round robin. The result was that Wisconsin had most wins and most total points, obviating the need for a playoff. Carleton A finished second. MVPs were Brant from Carleton B, Adam from Wisconsin, Jeff from Iowa State, and Neal from Carleton A. The UT-Austin A-team took first place, with Oklahoma A finishing second. Oklahoma's David Smith and Arkansas's Mike Wehrman finished first and second in the individual stats. The tournament lasted 10 rounds: a 7-game round robin among the 8 teams, then 2 3-game round robins for the top 4 and bottom 4 finishers in the first round robin. Rankings were determined by total wins, with the proviso that teams would stay in the half they were in upon entering the second round robin. Hence, A&M finished third and WSU fourth despite having fewer wins than Arkansas, since they were in the top bracket for the second round robin. The date of the tournament is tentatively set for Saturday, February 17, 2001. That day that was picked coincides with CBI Regionals in an effort to minimize scheduling conflicts. Please contact the UCR College Bowl Club for more information at collegebowl@usa.net CARLETON UNDERGRADUATE TOURNAMENT The Carleton College Academic Quiz Team announces that it will host CUT 3, the third annual Carleton Undergraduate Tournament, on Saturday March 3. This will be an undergraduate-only tournament with questions supplied by National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT). These are questions billed as being best suited for collegiate play by novice teams, rather than by full-squads of experienced quiz circuit regulars. But this tournament will welcome both novice teams and more experienced undergraduate players--with a twist. In order to try to match team strength to the question level, eligibility for this tournament as follows: Any school which did not earn an invitation to the NAQT ICT Division I field in 2000 will be welcome to enter traditional four-person teams. Any school which did earn an invitation to the NAQT ICT Division I field in 2000 may enter teams as follows: Teams of up to four players who are all first-year "novice" players. (That is, undergrads whose first intercollegiate academic quiz competition as part of a college team came during the current 2000/01 season.) OR Teams of up to two players who need not be novices, but who are undergraduates who have never themselves been credited with answering an average of 2.5 tossups per game played or better in any past NAQT ICT (1997-2000) in Division I. OR Solo undergraduate players who have themselves answered an average of 2.5 tossups per game played or better in any past NAQT ICT in Division I. To register teams or ask questions, contact Eric Hillemann at ehillema@carleton.edu. ==================== CALENDAR (Note: this issue was sent out during NAQT Sectionals.
