Academic Competition Newsletter Volume IX issue 1 editor in chief: Gaius Stern 6 October 2002 Welcome to the 9th year of the Academic Competition Newsletter. This serial started out as the ACF West newsletter and was designed to spread information about quizbowl into the more schools in west coast colleges in order to start more quizteams and to generally circulate information. In past years the newsletter has run columns on different formats of quizbowl play, buzzer system manufacturers, and local circuit personalities. The newsletter always posts invitations and tournament results free of charge to the schools running events. The scope of the newsletter expanded a few years ago to include Midwest quizbowl events. The dividing line is the Mississippi River, so that all events on this side of the river receive coverage. Readers are welcome to write in and make suggestions, corrections, and comments. On many occasions in the past the newsletter has goofed on an item and relies upon quick-witted subscribers to make corrections. Since the newsletter is an electronic serial, it is free to any who wish to add a subscription. Merely write and tell me what school you are affiliated with and which e-mail address you desire to be added to the subscriber list. Likewise, if you wish to cancel, just write the same address and ask to be removed from the list. This will be a fairly short edition. Often the newsletter stretches into 14k, but I think this one can be kept to under 10. This issue contains: calendar of Fall events (West, Midwest) results from UCLA, UCI various miscellania ------------------------ CALENDAR OF FALL EVENTS I am sorry this list is incomplete. I did not bother adding on HS events even when I knew them. Maybe I will throw those in next issue. It was neglectful to leave them off. If I failed to put your event on the calendar list, do not be offended and please accept our apologies in advance. The same goes for the contact info which I rarely could find in time. At least this gives some idea of what is out there. West Coast Contests: Sat. Oct. 12 UC Berk WIT Sat. Nov 2. ACF Fall West Coast tournament at UCLA ACF NorthWest, Simon Fraser Univ. Sat.
