Tourney: Nittany Lion Invitational Host: Pennsylvania State University Date: Oct. 22 Reporting: Doug O'Neal (Penn State) RESULTS OF THE 1994 NITTANY LION INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT Blue Division: PF Avg. They were all 5-3 in the division (second tiebreaker). In point differential in games among them (third tiebreaker), Roanoke was +20, Penn Stokes and Maryland both -10. Reverting to head-to-head to break the remaining tie, Maryland defeated Penn Stokes. Pitt Vipers defeated NYU A. Notes and observations: A piece of advice for tournament directors: when listing your tiebreaking steps, be sure to answer the question, "If one step partially breaks the tie but leaves other teams tied, do we revert back to step 1 to break the remaining tie, or keep going down the list of steps?" The NFL does revert back to step 1, some tournaments I've been to don't. We did. If we hadn't, Penn Stokes would have beaten out Maryland on step 4, point differential in all games. Both of Western Michigan A's losses were to Princeton Kermit, by a total of fifteen points. Ironically, Princeton Kermit's losses came to the seventh and ninth place teams in their division, NYU A and Dickinson Soda. In interdivisional play (the last two rounds of the round-robin), the Blue Division won 10 games, the White Division 8. The actual playoff qualifiers were the same, in the same orders, as they would have been had the interdivisional games not been played. PLAYOFFS Quarterfinals: Western Michigan A d. NYU B 185- 20 Maryland d. Princeton Fozzie 200-140 Cornell d. Roanoke 210-170 Priceton Kermit d. Pitt Bulls 235- 25 Semifinals: Western Michigan A d. Cornell 300-105 Princeton Kermit d. Maryland 355-170 Final: Princeton Kermit d. Western Michigan A 185-180 Notes: Congratulations to Dwight Kidder for his second straight NLIT scoring title. In his phenomenal performance this year, he answered more toss-ups than nine entire TEAMS. The itchy-trigger-finger award goes to Jeff Stewart of Princeton Kermit. On the other side, the patience award, for most correct without a penalty, goes to his teammate Jen Wadsack. Outstanding playoff performances were Jeff of Princeton Kermit, 23/9 in three games; Ati and Dave of WM A 11/4 and 10/3 respectively; and Dwight of Cornell 9/2 in two games. Finally, a personal note. This was our biggest tournament ever, and the first time we've used two buildings. I was nervous about it, but with the help of a lot of people it went very well.
