SYNOPSIS: The tournament was a double round robin with 9 teams. The ACF Nostradamus hit the nail on the head. Maryland was without history man Dave Goodman (the Official Biscuit of Academic Competition), but still managed to reclaim the title they lost to North Carolina (Chapel Hill) last year. Virginia DID beat Maryland on the last question -- by five points, 225-220, with two vicious protests pending, both of which were denied after long and vehement argument between Vishnu and myself. That was the first game. Maryland leaped out to a 270-25 lead at the half of the rematch game (the last of the tournament, played on a Hopkins packet). Andrew Yaphe, whom Maryland captain Arthur Fleming dubbed the "King of the Second Half", got 6 of the next 10, but Maryland held on to win 305 to 200. This gave Maryland first place on differential and total points -- their sixth tournament win this season, one away from the school record of 7 set by the Swisdak-led team of 1993-4. Sure enough, Johns Hopkins carried off the third place trophy, ahead of Guy Jordan's George Washington B team, but trailing Virginia and Maryland. The GW teams were next, with Guy and James Dinan playing on the B team, and Jeff Boulier and Anna Stafford on the A team. It's always interesting to watch Dave Vacca play his old teammates. Randolph-Macon dropped out of the tournament the night before, so they were replaced by Colin Russell and Brian Goldenberg of Penn State, who had come to keep score and observe. Thanks for filling in for R-M, guys! The tournament ran smoothly, logistically speaking, thanks to quality moderators Vishnu Jejjala, Alice Chou, John Edwards, Brick Barrientos, Ramesh Kannappan, and Rick Grimes. There was a one-hour delay for John Edwards to go home and get the buzzer system he left there Saturday morning, but play resumed at 10:30 and continued on schedule until 5:00. One glitch -- four of the buzzers on one of the systems locked out, but made no noise, so players on one team had to say "buzz". Maryland's interest was piqued by Christine Gorowara of Delaware's preliminary announcement of a Deep Bench tournament modeled on Minnesota's Art Fleming Memorial (the real Arthur Fleming liked the idea). A -5 by Arthur kept Maryland from reaching the 20-tossup mark in a 620 point win over their own C team. The Holy Grail is still out there. Shawn Askew, enough stats for you? (see below) Rob Coffey, I'll send you round-by-round results for the ACF Top 25 rankings later, or at least a Statkeeper file.
