The Caltech squad was attending its first tournament and went 9-5, -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of round-robin (pool of 15 teams): 1. Berkeley A (14-0) 2. Berkeley B (13-1) 3. Vanderbilt (11-3) 4. BYU A (10-4) Semifinals: Berkeley B def. Vanderbilt Berkeley A def. BYU A Finals: Berkeley B def. Berkeley A Personal observations: BYU A played well, but they spread around their talent too much, putting one of their best players, Bryce Inouye, on the B team, and stocking the A team with only three players. Had Bryce been on the A team, they very well may have made the finals, possibly even winning the tournament. Berkeley dominated the tournament utterly, as the win-loss record clearly attests; the only time a Berkeley team lost was to another Berkeley team. Also, two of their best players, Jeff Newman and Matt Baker, weren't in attendance. ACF Nationals, look out! Stanford's new generation of players looks very promising, especially freshman Brad Harris. Neophytes Caltech turned in some surprisingly strong performances, but lost to some teams they really shouldn't have. The questions were not as well-edited as they had been at previous CC's; point values were often mislabeled, extra words words were prevalent, and there were too many knee-jerk questions (eg. "A person who collects stamps is called a philatelist; what, FTP, is the name given to a person who collects butterflies?") On the bright side, there were few repeats, and some packets were quite good. Overall, the tournament went smoothly, despite some early snafus involving Kinko's copy center. First-time director Mark Ruzon did a fine job keeping the day moving along.
