TOURNAMENT: Art Fleming Memorial Deep Bench Academic Quiz Invitational HOST: University of Minnesota Minneapolis, Minn. DATE: November 10-11 FORMAT: [see below] TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS: Eric Hillemann, Carleton College, and Dave Dorman, University of Minnesota The 1st Annual Art Fleming Memorial Deep Bench Academic Quiz Invitational was held Nov.10-11 at the University of Minnesota, co-hosted by Minnesota and Carleton College. The "Deep Bench" format was something I made up, and debuted at this tournament with the enthusiastic cooperation of Minnesota's Dave Dorman. The way it worked, in a nutshell, was as follows. We had eight teams enter the tournament, each with 8 players. Each team divided their players up as follows: 1st and 2nd singles players, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd doubles teams, and 1st and 2nd foursomes. Every player was on a foursome, and also played either singles or doubles but not both. For each of the five classifications a 7 match round-robin was held; i.e, all the 1st singles players played one another; all the 2nd singles players played one another, and so forth. (Thus every individual player participated in 14 matches.) Each victory within any classification earned the team points as follows: 5 pts. per victory by #1 singles, #1 doubles, or #1 foursomes; 4 pts. per victory by #2 singles, #2 doubles, or #2 foursomes, and 3 pts. per victory by #3 doubles. Whichever team won the most total points in this fashion would be declared the tournament champion. Foursomes matches were traditionally styled matches of 24 tossups apiece. Singles and doubles matches consisted only of 24 tossups--no bonuses. Here are the official final standings: 1. Minnesota (151) 2. Wisconsin (139) 3. Chicago (134) 4. Iowa State (126) 5. Iowa (94) 6.
