1997/03/02 First of all, I would like to thank everyone for participating in the ACF Mid-Atlantic Regional. Twelve teams attended the regional at the University of Maryland, College Park. A full round-robin was run, then the twelve teams were placed into three playoff brackets of four teams each, for a final mini round robin. Here are the results: RR Playoffs Total 1. Maryland A 9-1 2-1 11-2 2. Virginia A 9-1 2-1 11-2 3. Virginia B 8-2 1-2 9-4 4. Ohio State 7-3 1-2 8-5 5. Princeton 6-4 2-0 8-4 * News of Retire... 6-5 1-2 7-7 6. GW 4-6 1-1 5-7 7. Virginia Tech 4-6 0-2 4-8 8. Thomas Jeff. HS 2-8 3-0 5-8 9. Howard 2-8 2-1 4-9 10. Maryland B 3-7 1-2 4-9 11. Randolph-Macon 1-9 0-3 1-12 * News of Our Retirement Has Been Greatly Exaggerated was an exhibition team of Matt Colvin, John Nam, Alice Chou, Brian Goldenberg, Ken LaSala, and Dave Vacca. Maryland B consisted of Khon"an the Destroyer" Lien and four freshmen. Teams ranked 5-7 played one fewer game because they played the exhibition team in the playoffs. Games against News... did not count. Both final overall ties, including the big one at the top, had to be decided by total points, due to the fact that there were just enough packets to run the 16-round tournament, and Maryland A and Virginia A split their head-to-head matches. Congratulations to Maryland A (Dave Hamilton, Dave Goodman, Arthur Fleming, Jesse Molesworth) for winning Regionals. Congratulations to Andrew Yaphe, the sole member of Virginia A, for an awesome performance. Congratulations also to 3rd place Virginia B (Phil, Carrie, Anthony) for completing a major feat: defeating Maryland A and Virginia A at the same tournament. The 1997 Mid-Atlantic Regional All-Star Team consisted of Andrew Yaphe (104.0 PPG), Mike Starsinic of Ohio State (73.5 PPG), John Edwards of Howard (68.5 PPG), and Phil O'Donaghue of Virginia B (53.0 PPG), with Jeff Stewart (52.0 PPG) as the alternate. Full team and individual stats will be posted within the next week or so. Remember, as Mr. Harman from BYU has already posted, please refrain from talking about the packets until the other Regionals have completed. Thank you. Adam Fine Maryland Academic Quiz Team
