Sunday, May 18, Michigan hosted a 1-on-1 tournament. Traditionally named for the previous year's winner, this was the Frazee Cup for the third year running. The event was created to honor Bard Cosman, the honorary namesake of the first event. Before I get to the results, let me post a small history of the event as described by David Frazee. ************************************************************************** For those who do not know, this particular tradition/rite of passage originated at Stanford in 1992 as the Cosman Cup. It continued at Stanford in 1993 as the Overdeck Cup, and 1994 as the Demmin Cup. I won it in 1994 and the Cup migrated to Michigan for 1995 because Stanford was too lame to continue the tradition. [for the youngin's: Bard Cosman was the 2nd leading scorer at the 1991 CBI NCT and demolished everyone in the all-star game. He was perhaps Stanford's best player ever. He also knew a lot about Antarctica. John Overdeck was a Putnam scholar and prodigy/whiz kid type who led Stanford in 1992 when Stanford placed 2nd at the CBI NCT. Jeff Demmin played for Princeton in the non CB NCT years and later played for Stanford. He currently writes for CBI and appeared on Jeopardy!] -David Frazee ************************************************************************** Now, onto the results of the round-robin of the 1997 Frazee Cup. All ties were broken by head-to-head. 1. John Sheahan 13-1 (lost to Benoy) 2. Michael Starsinic 13-1 (lost to John) 3. Benoy Chacko 12-2 (lost to Michael S., Rebecca) 4. Ravin Garg 10-4 (lost to above and Rory) 5. Steve Knowlton 10-4 (lost to above) 6. Rory Molinari 9-5 7. Greg Seroka 8-6 8. Mike Zarren 7-7 9. Jamie Brault 6-8 10. Michael Haynes 5-9 11. Rob Long 4-10 12. Alex Hovan 3-11 (beat Rebecca, Mike B. and Brad) 13. Rebecca Golden 3-11 (beat Benoy, Mike B. and Brad) 14. Mike Burger 2-12 (beat Brad, Rob) 15. Brad Savage 0-14 I had 3 usable packets from Caltech's Technophobia from last November. Before the tournament, players voted for a single-elimination playoff of the top 8, despite my warning that the potential playoff packets would be a noticeable shift in difficulty, distribution and time frame (the Technophobia being ACF, the 1-on-1 Frazee Cup more NAQT). In the quarterfinals: John defeated Mike Z. 190-90 Michael S. defeated Greg 175-170 Benoy defeated Rory 135-100 Steve defeated Ravin 140-20 In the semifinals: Steve defeated John 170-160 Michael S. defeated Benoy 280-130 In the finals: Steve defeated Michael S. 235-195 The winner of the 1997 Frazee Cup is Steve Knowlton. For those who didn't stick around for all of the playoffs, Steve overcame 100+ point deficits in both the semifinal and the final to win the tournament. Congratulations to Steve and to all the 1-on-1 participants. Also, I would like to thank all the staffers, Kevin Olmstead, Joe Janes, Brian Schefke, Anne Mitchell, Ray Robb, Katie Liming, James Brender, Jen Kraemer, and Michelle LaLonde. Without them, this 1-on-1 tradition wouldn't have continued. I hope, next year, everyone can come back for the 1998 Knowlton Cup. Hui-San
