After the completion of the Bruin Beach Party on Saturday, UCLA ran a mini trash tourney on Sunday-- Unabuzzer Strikes Again -- a sequel to Berkeley's Unabuzzer tourney, as Berkeley was kind enough to provide us with extra printed out question set from Michigan St.'s Tidy Bowl tourney (both those schools will soon be receiving copies of the 5 and a half packs submitted to our tourney, BTW). Entry was free to teams who submitted packs. The mini-tourney didn't run as smoothly as the Bruin Beach Party, primarily because I was so busy editing the Bruin Beach Party on Friday and running it on Saturday that I swear I had no idea Daylight Savings Time was going into effect (Doh! -- stupid Congress for moving up the date to early April). So instead of getting there 20 minutes early I was 40 minutes late. And I was the only one with the key to the rooms. (Double Doh!!) Once again, my apologies to all involved. We played a 7 team round robin with the two top teams playing a 1 game playoff for the title. 20 tossups were read in each round. Those teams turned out to be ASU at 5-1 and CalTechA at 4-2. ASU lost to CalTechB (which included Mike from Berkeley), and CalTechA's other loss came to Davis. Everyone else (UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford, Davis, CalTechB) was 3-3 or worse. ASU and CalTechA played a thrilling final, as the score was ASU 180, CalTechA 175 going into the last tossup. The question asked for the the name of the strange TV adventure series set in a midwestern town, at which point Cal Tech neg fived-- though ASU's Peter Freeman correctly buzzed in soon after anyway with "Eerie, Indiana", and ASU walked off with the title and 4 UCLA shot glasses, so that they can do even better on those name the alcoholic drinks boni next year (as opposed to those just plain name the alcoholic boni). ASU's victory was no surprise, given that Brian (Moore?) was I believe the top scorer at Berkeley's Unabuzzer, but CalTechA came out of nowhere in large part due to the great performance by Adam, who as shown by this summary of the top 10 players: (once again I have more detailed printouts using Statkeeper but I can't figure out how to save the results as text, any help would be appreciated, anyone else who wants their stats can email me) [ASU and CalTechA played 7 rds due to the final, I'm missing a Davis/Stanford scoresheet so their results are only for 5 games, and everyone else played 6 games.] Player Team TotTU TotInt Pts/Rd Adam CalTechA 41 6 54.3 Brian ASU 37 10 45.7 Nick Berkeley 26 4 40.0 Ben Davis 22 4 40.0 Roger Stanford 21 4 38.0 Richard CalTechB 22 5 32.5 Patrick UCLA 18 4 26.7 Haggai Berkeley 17 5 24.2 Peter ASU 18 3 23.6 Mike Berk/CalTechB 15 3 22.5 Adam was our tourney high scorer, or, if you will, the Uber-Unabuzzer. Thanks to everyone that came, and I hope we've solidified a trash trend. -- Asmin "Oz" Pathare UCLA
