From owner-qb@majordomo.iastate.edu Tue Jul 14 09:31:22 1998 The Minnesota Masters, consisting of the Paul Bunyan team tournament on Saturday, and the Blue Ox singles tournament on Sunday, was played this weekend at the University of Minnesota. Here are the results: Paul Bunyan Team Tournament: 1. Mexican Staring Frogs of Southern Tree Lanka (Dwight Kidder, Julie Stahlhut, Andrew Yaphe) 12-0 2. The Springer Bouncers (Jer Smith, Mike Sweeney, Tom Waters) 11-1 3. It's Raining Men (John Edwards, John Sheahan, Mike Zarren) 9-3 4. Two Boys and a Goy (Lorin Burte, Dan Fuller, Bruce Ikawa) 8-3-1 5. The Ghost of Elvis Yet to Come (Eric Reehl, Steve Watchorn, Mark Zimmer 6-6 5. Malcontents Under Presser (Dana Bacon, Dan Lee, Ben Weiss) 6-6 (5th place tie) 7. Marilyn Hanson (Darrell Frye, Matt Schneller, Steve Schroeder) 5-6-1 8. Extreme Catfighting (Rachel Marshak, Richard Mason, Maribeth Swiatek) 5-7 8. Poison Dart Frogs (R. Robert Hentzel, Josh Kortbein, Carolyn Pitcher) 5-7 (8th place tie) 10. Mexican Staring Frogs of Southern Eden Prairie (Dave Dorman, Rob Hoblit, Tim Varecka) 3-9 10. Binary Play-Doh Plants (Eric Bell, Mike Wehrmann, Mike Werhmann's father) 3-9 (10th place tie) 10. Team 21 (Steve Jenkins, Emily Pike, Andrew Ulland) 3-9 (10th place tie) 13. The Estonian Surf Team (Mark Erdahl, Tia Karelson, Brian Weikle) 1-11 Notes: as you see from the records of two teams, in this tournament ties at the end of the regular 22 question packets were not broken, but allowed to stand. Chris Goheen had been scheduled to play with Eric Bell and Mike Wehrmann on the Binary Play-Doh Plants, but his entire flight was cancelled by Continental and he was forced to miss the tournament. Since Dwight Kidder, Julie Stahlhut, and Brian Schefke won this tournament last summer, Dwight and Julie are repeat champions; Andrew wins in his first appearance in this tournament. Blue Ox Singles Tournament: This event started with three seeding rounds, of 45, 70, and 70 tossups each, with 5-6 people on each buzzer, in 5, and then 6, rooms. (Performance in round A salted people into what should have been roughly equal-strength rooms for round B; room rankings for round B determined placement for round C -- all the round B #1s played in the same round C room, to determine the order of seedings 1-5; the Round B #2s competed among themselves to determing seedings 6-10, and so forth.) This resulted in seeding the field 1-30. Then, after a preliminary round involving 13 vs. 20, 14 vs. 19, 15 vs. 18, and 16 vs. 17 (winners going to upper division), we broke into two divisions, the upper 16, and the lower 14. Each division then played a double elimination tournament within itself. (Head to head singles matches were 24 tossups only; sudden death to break ties.) Prizes of books or CDs were awarded at the end to the entire upper field (choices made in order of finish), and to the champion of the lower division, and to our volunteer moderators for the event. Below is final order of finish, with seeding number in parentheses, wins in lower case and LOSSES in upper case: 1. Tom Waters (1) [schroeder, watchorn, kidder, yaphe, yaphe] 2. Andrew Yaphe (3) [swiatek, burte, sheahan, WATERS, sheahan, WATERS] 3. John Sheahan (2) [pike, bell, YAPHE, kidder, YAPHE] 4. Dwight Kidder (4) [edwards, stahlhut, WATERS, watchorn, SHEAHAN] 5. Lorin Burte (6) [frye, YAPHE, edwards, bell, SHEAHAN] 6. Steve Watchorn (9) [fuller, WATERS, mason, stahlhut, KIDDER] 7. Eric Bell (10) [mason, SHEAHAN, fuller, BURTE] 8. Julie Stahlhut (12) [ikawa, KIDDER, swiatek, WATCHORN] 9. Richard Mason (7) [BELL, pike, WATCHORN] 10. Dan Fuller (8) [WATCHORN, schroeder, BELL] 11. John Edwards (13) [KIDDER, ikawa, BURTE] 12. Maribeth Swiatek (14) [YAPHE, frye, STAHLHUT] 13. Bruce Ikawa (5) [STAHLHUT, EDWARDS] 14. Darrell Frye (11) [BURTE, SWIATEK] 15. Emily Pike (15) [SHEAHAN, MASON] 16. Steve Schroeder (17) [WATERS, FULLER] (lower division) 1. Eric Reehl (16) [bye, WEHRMANN, jenkins, salk, sweeney, smith, lee, wehrmann, wehrmann] 2. Mike Wehrmann (24) [eiken, reehl, sweeney, lee, REEHL, REEHL] 3. Dan Lee (18) [bye, zarren, smith, WEHRMANN, REEHL] 4. Jer Smith (19) [salk, ulland, LEE, REEHL] 5. Ted Salk (30) [SMITH, snyder, weikle, REEHL] 9. Brian Weikle (21) [schneller, SWEENEY, SALK] 10. Mike Zarren (23) [jenkins, LEE, EIKEN] 11. Steve Jenkins (26) [ZARREN, bye, REEHL] 12. Andrew Ulland (27) [snyder, SMITH, SCHNELLER] 13. Dan Snyder (22) [ULLAND, SALK] 14. Carolyn Pitcher (29) [SWEENEY, SCHNELLER] I think that the reaction to the singles tournament, in a format that was being tried for the first time, was decidedly favorable. My only regret about it was that it took about an hour and a half longer to play out than I'd projected. (This resulted in a couple of people heading for the airport in rather a rush at the end in order to make their flights.) Questions from these two tournaments are available from me, for $20 for each set. The Bunyan questions are 13 fully-edited rounds of 22 tossups and bonuses. The Blue Ox questions are 480 tossups-only, about half by R. Robert Hentzel and half by me, and proofed and edited with extreme care. (Note: most participants in this tournament will not yet have heard two of the 25-question Blue Ox sets, one of which was not read at all, and the other of which was needed only for the lower division final between Reehl and Wehrmann; nor will they yet have heard most of the other 30+ questions designated as extras available for tiebreakers or screwups.) Because the Blue Ox questions will be played again at similar singles events attached to the upcoming Virginia Open (7/26), and to the QuESADILLA at Cal Tech (weekend of Aug. 8), anyone buying the Blue Ox set will not actually receive them until after Aug. 8. For this reason also, please do not discuss the actual content of particular Blue Ox questions before the latter two events have been played. Eric Hillemann Minnesota Masters TD
