Subject: QB: RESULTS: JCV Memorial 5 Quick Results / My Comments Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 23:02:51 EST Sender: owner-qb@iastate.edu Hi everyone, Just to let you know (as Tim may be getting some well-needed and deserved rest right now) the Juan Carlos Viscerra Memorial was held today. Thirteen teams (including two exhibition teams) came to GW to play. The tournament was won by Maryland Your Team Name Sucks, who defeated Virginia Tech A in an exciting 230-195 final match. Both teams entered the final with identical 10-2 records. Congratulations both to Dave Hamilton, Mike Starsinic, Josh Allen, and Khon Lien, for winning the tournament; and also to Elliot Brenner, Roger Craig, Dennis Loo, and Jason Thweatt for posting quite a strong showing. Maryland Girl Power (a.k.a. Homgirls) finished third, while my exhibition team, Pretty Fly For a White Guy, would have finished fourth had our result counted (both teams at 9-3). Now for my comments: -I believe I have played Virginia Tech A eight or nine times in my career, and I believe exactly one game was decided by more than 50 points, now including today's 250-230 win by Tech. I think we give each other heart attacks :) But seriously, VT is a team to be reckoned with. -A lot of the questions and packets were good, though I thought a little on the easy side (not that I was complaining about that). Still, a couple of packets written by inexperienced teams were par at best. It's good to have people who have not written before write questions, but they should be checked, either by a more experienced teammate or by the tournament director. -Difficulty ranged greatly at some points within packets. I believe one packet had a bonus on the early Song dynasty poet Li Yu, as well as a binary bonus on Alice in Wonderland. -On the plus side, the tournament fee was very reasonable ($60 for my team), and we got to play 12 games, so I appreciated that. I am also glad Tim allowed exhibition teams; I had fun playing with fellow ex-Maryland crusty curmudgeons Arthur Fleming, Dave Vacca, and Ken LaSala. See a lot of you at Penn Bowl next weekend! -Adam Fine
