A new king of the Elvis was crowned Saturday afternoon February 6, 1999, when Carleton A finally broke the stranglehold which the University of Chicago has had on the tournament for the last many years. Carleton A led the round robin with a 12-3 record going into the semifinals; Chicago was right behind them with an 11-4 record. The two teams had split their two games in the round robin. In semifinal action against Minnesota, Carleton managed to pull a come-from-behind win on the last question to come away with a 260-240 victory. Meanwhile, Chicago had jumped out to an early lead in the other semifinal, eventually defeating Illinois 290-150. Chicago again took an early lead against Carleton in the finals, but Carleton managed to close the gap to 125-75 by the half. With two tossups remaining, Chicago led 190-160. However, Chicago took two minus-fiveson questions 23 and 24, and Carleton picked up both rebounds and 30'd the boni in order to take a 240-180 victory. Considering that big guns Andrew Yaphe and Mike Zarren weren't at the tournament, the Chicago A team did an outstanding job and certainly deserves recognition for a hard-fought tournament. The festivities before the semifinal were further enlived by our second triennial pie-eating contest. Tarps were laid down and the amazing lemon meringue pies (kindly provided by the Norske Nook in beautiful downtown Osseo, home of the world's best pies, as the teams can attest) were placed, ready for the 5th-8th place finishers. Minnesota, St. Olaf, Wisconsin and Carleton B (which took the place of Bowling Green, who wanted to hit the road early) dug into the pies with a rabid fervor, but the gluttons from the University of Minnesota B came away triumphant and won a set of Elvis movies for their heroics. Awards were as follows: Best Moderator: Eric Hillemann Best Packet: Carleton A All-Stars: 1. Emily Pike, Carleton 2. Steve Watchorn, Wisconsin 3. Dan Lee, Minnesota 4. (three-way tie) Jeremiah of Illinois, Jason Arvey of Chicago A and Andy Felton of Carleton A Best Hat: Jeremy Riedesel Bowling Green won the lower pool (the Lisa Marie pool) by going undefeated in it and also received a trophy for that achievement. Among the many highlights of the tournament were some unusual scores, such as Chicago B's score in round 5 of 204.64159... They managed to score 8 1/2 and pi on one question. Don't you wish you had come now? We hope to have photos up on the UW College Bowl Group website soon. Again, many thanks to the volunteers who helped make this an incredibly fun Elvis: Eric Hillemann, Dave Dorman, Doug Scott, Steve Lange, Karl Schmidt, George Atendido, Mike Clawson, Jeremy Riedesel, Janine Zayed, Steve Watchorn and the entire Wisconsin squad who had the unenviable task of cleaning up after the pie eating contest.
