Date: Sun, 06 Dec 1998 18:59:13 -0600 From: Greg Lyon Subject: QB: RESULTS: Gateway Invitational Tournament The 5th Annual Gateway Invitational Tournament was held at Washington Unversity in St. Louis yesterday. 18 teams played in a two bracket modified round robin tournament. Each team played every other team in their bracket, as well as two teams from the other bracket who finished in a similar position. All games counted in the final standings. After the preliminary rounds, the results were: Bracket A Team Name Win Loss Points Opp Pts Diff/GM Arkansas A 8 2 3360 2040 132.00 Chicago B 7 3 2725 2155 57.00 Iowa 6 4 2825 2125 70.00 Vanderbilt 6 4 2870 2545 32.50 Quincy A 4 6 2080 2585 -50.50 Illinois B 4 6 2375 2235 14.00 Northwestern 4 6 1490 2485 -99.50 UM - KC 3 7 1615 2560 -94.50 Missouri B 2 8 1710 2560 -85.00 Bracket B Team Name Win Loss Points Opp Pts Diff/GM Chicago A 10 0 3490 1150 234.00 Illinois A 7 3 3245 1775 147.00 Bowling Green 7 3 2360 1845 51.50 Missouri A 6 4 2755 1930 82.50 UM - Rolla 6 4 2455 2040 41.50 Arkansas B 4 6 1645 2470 -82.50 Wisconsin 4 6 1400 2405 -100.50 Quincy B 2 8 1015 2450 -143.50 Okla. So, needless to say, I didn't hear the questions which there have already been some comments about. Looking at the surveys we received back, there was FAR more (around 2 to 1) positive feedback about the questions than negative feedback. One of the goals I've had for the GIT is to make it a fun tournament for all teams playing, even ones which do not otherwise play on the circuit.. and I think we are accomplishing that. Looking at the scores of the playoffs, I think the questions may have been a bit too easy for the highest caliber teams we had, but I'd rather err on the side of high scores than have a "stump the chump" game -- which I have seen at other invitationals. Overall, I don't think the results of the tournament would have been much different if "harder" questions had been used. In my mind, NAQT questions offer the most consistent rounds which can be used at a timed tournament such as the GIT. Our past attempts at using packet submission have resulted in many long hours of editing to turn what was submitted into a balanced packet for timed play. Unless NAQT questions change dramatically, I think we will continue to use them for the GIT. Of course, comments and opinions are always welcome. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are the best individual statistics I can come up with from the GIT. Unfortunately, we did not keep running individual stats yesterday and there was one scorekeeper who did not keep player statistics. As a result, I did not notice this until totaling up the statistics today. Therefore, a number of teams are missing individual results for between 1 and 5 rounds.
