Here's some brief results for the West Sectional (someone's using the computer that I saved the stats on, so I'll post them later.) Congrats to Stanford A for winning Division I. Their only loss was to Berkeley A in the first match of the tournament. Berkeley A came in second, UCLA third, and ASU Otter fourth. Division II was won by the Ice Weasels, a team from our very own Caltech, who went undefeated. Second place was a tie between Berkeley B and ASU Flounder, who just wanted to call it a tie. As I said, further stats will be posted soon. To answer Adam Fine's question: > Has there ever been another tournament where two teams played each other > SIX TIMES?? I'm curious. Division I had a 2 1/2 round robin, whereby Berkeley and Stanford played each other three times. Had a playoff been necessary, they would have played each other five times. Six is a lot. -- maribeth -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Finally -- here's the results for Division I of the NAQT West Sectional! Division I had the following format: The 7 teams played a double round robin. Then, the teams were grouped into two brackets consisting of the top four teams and the bottom three. Each bracket then played another RR. Excel is a temperamental thing. Therefore, the Caltech Ice Weasels won the tournament with a perfect record. Congratulations! ASU Flounder and Berkeley B tied for second place. Apparently, they tried to break the tie, but were unsuccessful and decided they wanted to give it up and just be friends. Their only loss was > to Berkeley A in the first match of the tournament. Stanford A is pretty damn terrifying. I mean, imagine that your team is playing Berkeley A. And imagine that your team gets maybe one of the first eight or nine tossups. And then imagine that in trying to catch up, you neg five or six times. And imagine that from this position, you STILL come within a hair of winning--would, in fact, have won, if your final answer had been "Cretaceous" instead of "Creta...mumble... oh, I don't know." And then imagine that this loss is your only loss of the tournament and on a subsequent encounter you beat Berkeley A by a score of 440 to 170. These are indications that you are on a good team. I think that in the recent "poll," something like 31 out of 32 people ranked Chicago first and not one person picked Stanford to repeat as national champions. This suggests to me that there is money to be made by would-be Quiz Bowl Bookies. I'm not saying that Chicago can't beat Stanford--I'm sure they can--but what kind of point spread will you give me? > Berkeley A came in second, UCLA third, and ASU Otter fourth. USC, ASU Otter, and UCLA (wow, four players) all seemed stronger this weekend than they have in recent tournaments. > Second place [Division II] was a tie between Berkeley B and ASU > Flounder, who just wanted to call it a tie. With tied overall records after a triple round robin, these teams did try to break the tie -- and ASU Flounder won that match. However it was then pointed out that, although ASU now had a better overall record, their head-to-head record was tied... so they played another round and Berkeley B won that one. Suffice it to say that the teams were evenly matched. Richard --
