Subject: QB: NLIT Date: Sun, 08 Nov 1998 19:37:00 PST This year's NLIT (our salute to Andy Wang) was won by Maryland Bites (Mike S., John Nam as Andy Wang, Mike C, and Jessica) they won a best-of-3 final over Penn. Third place (losing out in the 3 way tie at the top) went to Swarthmore. State College High School finished 4th (but they're quite impressive for a HS team) and Johns Hopkins came in 5th. Full stats and results will be posted here and on our graphically-challenged webpage (www.clubs.psu.edu/quizbowl) in a few days. Thanks to Caltech and Illinois for joining in a national 3-way packet swap. And thanks to Dwight Kidder, James Dinan, and Doug O'Neal for coming to help moderate. And to Adam Fine for writing a freelance theme round. And of course, thanks to Andy Wang for being himself, even if he wasn't here. John Nam did his best, especially in the finals, to emulate the man, the myth, and the legend that we all know well. In the second game of the best-of-3 finals, Maryland Bites won by almost the same score, 250-185. In the deciding 3rd game, Maryland Bites won 285-150 to win this year's NLIT. Other items of note: Mike Starsinic from Maryland won the scoring title for the 2nd time in 3 years, although the last time was with Ohio St. Tim from JHU won the neg title with 20, beating our Mark from Maryland Sucks by 1. This HS team is for real. We took Jacob with us to Terrapin the week before and he averaged over 45ppg there. By far he's one of the most impressive HS players I've ever seen, and that includes such players as Andrew Yaphe, Julie Singer, and James Rogers.
