The UTC Academic Trivia Association hosted the 2nd annual Center of the Known Universe Open on Oct. 2. 23 teams from 17 colleges and universities participated, with the field split into two divisions based on players' experience levels. There would be a full round robin for each division, followed by a playoff unless one team went undefeated through the round robin. Division I results were: Team Name Win Loss Maryland 10 0 Kentucky1 9 1 So Carolina 7 3 Georgia Tech1 7 3 Georgia 5 4 Duke 5 5 Tenn. Tech1 3 6 Vanderbilt1 3 6 Virginia Tech1 2 8 Georgia State 2 8 TN Chatt 1 9 Thus the University of Maryland was our 1999 Division I champion, with Kentucky continuing a tradition at our tournaments by finishing second. Third place bears special mention. A protest on a bonus answer worth 10 pts. was upheld after we researched it and found out the answer given was indeed an acceptable alternative answer. This 10 pts. forced the Georgia-South Carolina match to tossup 21, which Georgia Tech got, giving it the match and third place. Folks, remember that next time you wonder how much a single answer matters. (Georgia Tech also had the statistical oddity of finishing 7-3 with a negative point differential -- anyone ever see that before?) Division II was a bit more complicated. After the round robin, results were: Emory Gold 10 1 Central Fla. 9 2 U of the South 9 2 Emory Blue 8 3 Georgia Tech2 6 5 Kentucky2 6 5 Oglethorpe 5 6 Denison 4 7 Tenn. Tech2 3 8 Vanderbilt2 3 9 Virginia Tech2 2 9 Dalton St 1 10 By our rules this forced playoffs, yet one team had a better record than the other playoff teams. As we have in the past, we wanted the team that won to have both won their last match and have the fewest losses of any team in the tournament. This looked like it might require one more full packet than we had, but necessity being a mother, we found an innovative solution that worked so well we think we'll keep using it: a shootout. First, in the semifinals, the University of the South defeated Central Florida 130 to 55 to advance to the finals against Emory Gold, which had a semifinal bye. Then on the finals packet the University of the South defeated Emory Gold 150 to 90. This led us to use the shootout tiebreaker -- 20 tossups, no bonuses. (This was good not only because we had no more bonuses, but als because everyone was getting mighty hungry.) The University of the South then won the shootout 75 to 55 to take first place in Division II. Individual honors were awarded as follows: Rookie of the Year -- Since this is the first intercollegiate tournament for a fair number of players, each year we recognize the first-time player with the highest PPG. Doug Laney of Tennessee Tech II edged out Steven Richardson of Kentucky for the trophy. All-Stars: We hadn't decided whether to honor the top scorers overall or the top ones for each division, but it was moot as the highest scorers were pretty well split between the two divisions. MVP honors went to one-man wrecking crew Gourab Bhattacharjee of Duke with 71.5 PPG. Other All-Stars were: Dave Hamilton, MD (62.0 PPG) Justin Sausville, U. of the South (58.2) Matt Schneller, Vanderbilt (57.0) Kelly McKenzie, Kentucky (56.5) Fabio Juliano, Central Florida (55.9) Kristen Hamlin, Denison (51.8) Christina Hansen, Emory Gold (47.73) Brian Jenkins, Georgia (47.0) (Those who took home stats printouts may have noticed that T.C. Ford of South Carolina was the #10 scorer. This was remarkable in that T.C. was not in attendance. That was actually Adam Humphreys ; the USC team all played under pseudonyms of former USC players, and we never got the real names into the computer.) -- Sorry for the delay -- life has a way of interfering with one's hobbies.
