On November 20, 15 teams representing 11 schools came to Virginia Tech to contest the NAQT Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament. Congratulations are in order to Penn State University, whose A team lost only 1 game en route to the tournament championship. By virtue of its wins over fellow 11-3 teams Virginia A and Johns Hopkins A, Pennsylvania A claimed second place, as well as Best Undergraduate team honors. In addition, the following individuals took home All-Star honors as the top four scorers in Division I: Shawn Pickrell, George Mason (MVP), 92.14 PPG John Kenney, Virginia A, 89.64 PPG Adam Fine, Johns Hopkins A, 54.64 PPG Jason Garbowski, Penn A, 52.86 PPG (Those who were in attendance at the Division II awards ceremony will notice a different result here than was announced. These results are correct. Such is the value of double-checking. Only one individual has been seriously affected by the change, and that person is being contacted separately.) There are a few other team and individual accolades which I think merit mentioning: - In winning the tournament, Penn State A placed all of its players in the top third of individual scorers, with each of its team members scoring at least 23 PPG. - Tournament MVP Shawn Pickrell was the only player representing George Mason University, and turned in a strong fifth-place finish at 9-5 Team Statistics Place W L PF PA 15 10 -5 Questions PSU A H 1 13 1 5295 1715 43 144 31 292 Penn A J 2 11 3 3730 2120 19 133 7 310 UVa A M 3 11 3 4045 2615 22 135 22 313 JHU A D 4 11 3 3860 1925 17 139 29 307 GMU B 5 10 4 2840 2665 17 113 19 312 Pitt L 6 10 4 3420 2190 19 116 39 318 Duke A 7 9 5 3640 1975 17 131 28 304 UVa B N 8 7 7 2095 2705 12 96 35 311 GWU C 9 5 9 1770 3220 10 76 26 292 UNC G 10 4 10 2420 2755 11 104 46 294 Penn B K 11 4 10 1480 3155 13 72 15 295 JHU B E 12 4 10 1950 3150 7 80 13 314 UMBC F 13 2 12 1255 3355 7 61 16 303 PSU B I 13 2 12 1365 3300 6 69 23 302 Wake O 13 2 12 1195 3515 1 65 8 321 Penn A defeated Virginia A and Hopkins A to finish 2nd. After a triple-round robin, Johns Hopkins and Penn State both finished 12-3, and so advanced to a one-game playoff to settle the championship. Congratulations are in order to Johns Hopkins University, who won the playoff game, and thus claimed the title of Mid-Atlantic CCT Division II champion. In addition, the following individuals are to be commended for earning All-Star honors, as the top four scoreres in Division II: (I apologize to the players listed below for not including your last names. I don't know them or have them.) Charbel, Johns Hopkins (MVP), 44.33 PPG Segal, Penn State, 38.67 PPG Dan, Carnegie-Mellon, 36.67 PPG Josh, Pittsburgh A, 34.29 PPG Notes on the Division II Tournament: - In only one of the round-robins (the first) did a team (Penn State) go undefeated. - Pittsburgh A made a strong run at the title, defeating both finalists in the second round-robin after losing to both teams in the first round robin. A 4-1 record in the final round robin left Pitt A with a very strong 11-4 record and a third place finish.
