This weekend, the University of Iowa Academic Quiz Club hosted their fall theme tournament, informally titled "Quit Playing Quiz Bowl with My Heart". In short, congratulations to the University of Oklahoma, who won the tournament, beating out Illinois Sharks with Frickin' Lasers in the finals. Henry Herron of Wichita State was the top individual scorer in the round robin. 14 teams participated in a full round robin. Due to a scheduling quirk, there were 15 rounds of play; each team had two byes. Themed minipackets of 5/5 were written. Each round consisted of five such minipackets, with 1 history, 1 science, 1 lit, 1 pop culture/trash, and 1 misc (for things like fine arts, etc.). Teams held a coin toss at the beginning of each round and the winner selected two minipackets based on its topic and decided when in the round the packets would be read. The other team then selected two other packets. The fifth packet was not read. So each round consisted of 20 and 20. As one can imagine, this was a pretty trash heavy tournament. It also meant that individual players, for the most part, had streaks of wicked brilliance and wicked stupidity. And also of wicked luckiness. This allowed for a little more volatility than a standard tournament with packets adhering to strict question distributions. Some teams dug it, some were ambivalent. But hey, we're Iowa. Normal tournaments aren't in our nature. :-) Thanks to all who came and joined in the fun. Friday night was a little tedious, due to the small number of rooms (due to two other conferences being held this weekend), but overall things ran very smoothly, and I'd like to thank everyone involved for that; it made my job very easy. :-) This weekend's questions -- 17 rounds of 5 minipackets -- are available for $20, or for some kind of trading schemes. Interested parties should contact team manager Lindsay Jones at lvjones@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu. Given the tournament format, this may not be the best way to rank teams. So don't take the rankings too seriously. In the round robin, Oklahoma defeated Illinois Sharks with Frickin' Lasers and lost one game to someone else, :-), to finish 12-1. Illinois Sharks and Illinois Ill-Tempered Sea Bass were tied at 11-1 going into the final round when they played each other. The Sharks won, so Sharks and Oklahoma were tied and went to the finals. Oklahoma was given a game advantage, meaning they had to win 1 game to win the tournament, and Illinois had to win two. Illinois won the first round, 200-190. Oklahoma won the final round, 235-175, finishing strong on a Simpsons packet that could only be described as "hard core". Individual stats will follow tomorrow, when I will summon the energy to type them up. Hope everyone had a safe journey home! Jon Stewart -- These are the overall player rankings after 15 rounds.
