_ Book Search Interface Design _

School of Information Management Science 141 - Search Engines

The objective of my user interface design for an online book search application is to make online book search more flexible and powerful with faceted metadata and more analogous to traditional book search where the user is able to browse easily through related books. This way, book search is more powerful because the user is able to search more sophisticatedly and across more parameters because of the advantages of faceted metadata. Also, with the added feature of browsing across the same category or across related authors or books, the user is able to navigate around different books as if the user was browsing through the stacks in a library.

Computer Science 160 - User Interface Design, Prototyping, and Evaluation
View demo

One of the courses I took at UC Berkeley was Computer Science 160 – User Interface Design, Prototyping, and Evaluation. For our final project, I worked with a small team to design a working prototype of an educational math game for 1st and 2nd graders at a local elementary school in Oakland. Kids are the most honest and free-speaking critics, and with their feedback and testing, we were able to determine what they wanted in a learning tool. The result was a prototype of a fun, interactive game that I built using Flash combining the research from working with the kids and the principles we learned in the class. I am most proud of this experience because with the use of sound human computer interaction techniques, it was such a rewarding experience to design an educational game that made math fun for young children.

Every year, the Haas School of Business comes out with a new brochure for their Full-time MBA and Evening & Weekend MBA programs. I replaced the content from the old website with the content from the new brochures. This included integrating the new textual and visual content into a new layout template, optimizing graphics for web use, and using Javascript to make dynamic popup profiles.

BOA - Better Off Availabilities
Mock up: http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~ritac/cafe/boa/current/avails_edit_v01.php

BOA, otherwise known as Better Off Availabilities, is a script that consultants use to input their schedule so that consultant schedulers would know what times they are available and not available to work. I created a clean and simple design and modified the Perl script to be more user friendly and more visually appealing. The current working version located here is password protected for only consultants to use. Above is an HTML mock-up of BOA. The actual script is dynamic.

I created a website in collaberation with my supervisor, Laura Driussi, and the author, Sharron Dalton, for the UC Press book, Our Overweight Children by Sharron Dalton to serve as a resource guide for readers of the book. This resource guides include excerpts, narratives, and key advice from the book as well as diet suggestions and helpful links to relevant resources.

I created a website with interactive Flash content in collaberation with six other UC Berkeley students and a professor from the School of Information Management and Systems at UC Berkeley. We worked together to design the layout of the website over a four week period. I also worked together with another team member on creating an interactive Flash movie to showcase the work of our research group.

I created a website for my dance group, China Dance Theatre, and for the student-run UC Berkeley Chinese Dance class

that I was a head coordinator for for the 2004-2005 school year. China Dance Theatre is the only Chinese Dance performance group on campus, and the website serves to post our upcoming performances in and around the Berkeley campus and to showcase photos and video clips of our past performances. _..
