Comment: This was an awesome class. You can tell Swidler was clearly enthusiastic about the material she taught. Her assignments/exams weren't all that bad if you put in the work. However, there is a rather lengthy final paper due but I think the class overall is well worth it. At least, I enjoyed it.

Comment: Professor Swidler was very passionate and intelligent about what she taught! The grading was extremely fair. An A should be no problem as long as you put in the effort. Great GSIs too! Interesting and worthwhile class.

Comment: Really easy class, but pretty boring. Professor unavailable and my GSI didn't care to talk more about the material. Easy A, but I could have gotten a similar understanding just by skimming the readings.

Comment: Strict and fair professor--definitely gave me quite a fright about cheating on the first day with her speech. Her tests are fair and easy, as long as you do the readings, go to lecture...discussion helped me a lot too. As an intro to sociology, the course was well-rounded and gave me good insight to the study. GSIs were helpful in guiding me through my first big writing class at Cal.

Comment: She's really smart except none of her lectures coincide with the readings and she goes off on a lot of a tangents.

Comment: Professor Swidler may get too caught up in talking about things not related to the books being read, but she educates the class as much as she can about the topic in full picture. Wonderful professor, and plus the class is so interesting. I'm a science major, so this class gave a refreshing new view of society.

Comment: She probably is a great sociologist and extremely knowledgeable. However, she is not so good at articulating her thoughts and delivering the materials to students in non-confusing manner. The course does not have a textbook and her powerpoint is poorly organized (small things like numbering, and format are confusing; don't know what is title or which bullet points belongs to which sub category). Overall, it was not a hard course and the materials learned are very interesting but frustrating course to take. Also, Jaren, who is my GSI, seems to not know what he is teaching. He doesn't have the most basic concepts straight in his brain!

Comment: Professor Swidler is a pretty awesome lecturer but there is SO much reading. There is at least 200 pages per week, sometimes even more.. However, most of the readings are pretty interesting and most are easy to understand. There are webcasts of her lecture but she goes off topic a lot so it's easy to focus in person in class. You can tell that she's pretty into sociology and if you search up her name, she is pretty renown (she was referenced in one of our readings). Overall, good class to take if you like reading and have a lot of time to read.

Comment: The instructor is nice, and my GSI was really knowledgeable! I found the readings to be kinda boring, and they didn't always match up perfectly with what we were learning in lecture. I found the lectures to be interesting though, and pretty easy to take notes on. The slides were always straight forward.

Comment: Really interesting class! Our sections had weekly forums, but you could miss up to three. They were basically completion. My GSI graded exams and papers pretty leniently! Overall, a pretty interesting class. Lots of reading though. You can get away with skimming over some of it though.

Comment: "Awesome" hardly does Swidler justice. For our final, we had a question asking us how we would implement policy to reduce drop-outs in education, basing our answers on the readings. The class is compelling, relevant, shocking, and I left every lecture angry at the world, wanting to change it with sociology.

Comment: Swidler is a cool professor. Her midterm was ok and her final was a bit on the difficult side. Readings were good in the beginning but got kind of boring at the end. Class was kind of abstract for me, but it was still an interesting class.

Comment: Professor Swidler is one of the best professors that I have ever had. She's engaging, interesting, smart, and explains concepts VERY well. If you want to do well in the class, make sure you attend class and do the readings. She's also very helpful and willing to help; she usually has office hours at Yali's where you can just sit and chat with her and ask any questions.

Comment: Swidler was my lecture-love at first sight. The first lecture she immediately began by explaining the myth of individualism in America, a topic I had always wondered about. She very clearly explained Durkheim's theory of the necessity of society and proceeded to blow all of our minds. Lecture after Lecture she enlightened us, grazing over topics such as power, culture, and socialization. As the class got to the end of the year, the novelty wore off and her lectures lost that initial power, but the first month of the class is awesome. The books and articles you read are very helpful, although sometimes you won't need to read them--make sure you at least understand all the points. The exams are great-- you get to pick which questions to answer! Definitely spend some time with Swidles outside of class... it's well worth it!

Comment: Ann Swidler is a great lecturer! Always improved my mornings after listening to her. There is a fair amount of reading but once you get through it and can discuss it, it's very rewarding. Make sure you can write about what you've learned because the exams are all short/long essays.

Comment: This class was awesome. Prof. Swidler made sociology really interesting. There are readings every week so there is some work, but some of these are quite interesting, so it isn't too bad. The tests were easy (if you go to lecture, since there is no textbook) - essay format.
