MATH 1B (Fall 2008)

Comment: Exams weren't too bad. The homework was long and boring, but that's math for you. Bergman's lectures rambled on about things that were completely unrelated to the subject. He was really hard to understand, because he mumbled a lot. He was really enthusiastic about math and was a nice guy, his lectures weren't helpful for an undergrad though.

Comment: Very intelligent, but the worst lecturer I've ever had at Cal. Absolutely incoherent, talks to the board, and is condescending towards student questions. Despite getting a 5 on AP Calc BC, I was still utterly confused by his lectures, and eventually I stopped going altogether. Exams are difficult but fair, barring the proof question on each one. Almost nobody got the proof question right when I took the class (he made an announcement in class). Avoid if possible. Seriously.

Comment: Lectures are AWFUL. He's so brilliant that he doesn't know how to explain what - to him - are basic concepts. If you take his class, expect to count on your GSI and your textbook exclusively. He seems like a nice guy, but he's one of the worst professors I've ever had.

Comment: He is an okay professor. Has a good level of enthusiasm for the subject and went off on tangents about some interesting stories. One of the most memorable ones was the one about him being a kid and having a watch and he heard some bell chimes (forgot what sound it was) but he was timing the bell pattern and this is in discussion with series and such. And he realized there was a pattern but over time the pattern seemed to be off by just a tiny bit that he'd readjust his formula to fit the pattern. Later on he realized that it wasn't the bell chimes that were off it was his watch! His watch was a winding watch and so obviously the time keeping strays off the exact time. His exams covered material that he didn't always talk about and he wasn't very helpful. Made a lot of mistakes during lecture during examples. Assignments are the average calculus assignments. (Last semester for him though so I guess nobody will ever have him again).

Comment: One of the worst professors I've ever had at Cal. His teaching style is confusing, and most of the material he presents is not really relevant. He punishes students who ditch class by putting lecture material on exams.

Comment: A bit scatterbrained and very rough lectures. Tries to be engaging, but doesn't always work out. Actual exams were fairly difficult in comparison to the practice exams he gave.

Comment: Bergman is not a very good lecturer. You can tell he has better things to be doing than an introductory calculus course. Otherwise the course was fine, including fair exams, that generally included one 'proof-type' problem each.

Comment: Spends a lot of time doing problems that intrigue him, but bores most of the class. Tests are not insanely difficult, but grading is pretty harsh- minimal partial credit. Truly defines a "weeder" course.

Comment: He's pretty bad at teaching lower division math but seems like he'd be much much better at upper division or graduate math.

Comment: Difficult class that is more oriented toward proofs than anything else. Take only if you are brilliant and can stand painfully boring lectures.

MATH H113 (Spring 2009)

Comment: Like all upper division math classes, make sure to keep up with the reading and do/learn/understand psets thoroughly. Airtight understanding of material is necessary to do well on exams. Professor is enthusiastic, but bad lecturer.
