Comment: first off, i'm not quite sure why Borcherds has such a low overall rating. I mean, he's not very good, but he's absolutely the best math 1A professor you can get. You don't have to go to lecture (in fact, you should not go to lecture. it will make your life ridiculously more complicated, and chew up 3 hours of your week.) and homework is 25% of your grade. yes, that's right - homework, which is not even graded (he literally said "you can open a phone book and start copying down what you see, hand it in and you'll still get full credit.") is worth 25% of your grade. the only thing that's slightly variable is the GSI, who writes your weekly quiz. overall, Borcherds is an easy A. take my word.

Comment: Prof. Borcherds was alright. It was definitely interesting watching his hand on the projector the first two or three lectures; afterwards it became really difficult to concentrate in class. He tends to write out problems or theories and solve them, and then crosses it all out and says in his British accent, "However, that is all WRONG". This tendency became so frequent that the class, or the few that actually showed up regularly, would burst out laughing. He once even gave a lecture on double and triple rainbows. You will do perfectly fine in this class as long as you do the homework and understand it. Make sure you have a good GSI if you don't attend lectures or aren't that great at math though. Drawing graphs can get tricky in this class, and Borcherds loves his graphs. Oh, and the exams are moderately easy, it depends how much you study or understand math.

Comment: The best about this professor is that you can learn his thinking way and his own method to solve different kinds of questions(e.g. if a method doesn't work how I can do with the problem OR how many methods I can try to solve a kind of questions). It is not just about learning some formulas but a mathematical way to think when you are solving math problems! His class requires your lots of attention to follow and even needs you to study the material a little bit before the class.

Comment: I do like this professor as a person he is interesting to talk to. Once someone stole his pile of paper that he writes on and then projects for the class. He then proceeded to fit the rest of the lecture on one piece of paper which was very entertaining. He handled that situation well. Basically if you haven't taken calculus before this course will be exceptionally challenging. Just become best friends with the book or GSI and you should be able to do well. The tests were fair. Lectures were just not really worth it. Sometimes he would put a problem on the test that was from lecture but usually you wouldn't have copied it down because you didn't think he would test you on it. Most times in lecture he proves something or shows you what won't work or how not to do a problem. He also gets simple arithmetic wrong all the time. It just bugged me. He is very smart. He won a fields medal. He just gets nervous speaking in front of a lot of people. So he makes mistakes. He really isn't that great of a calculus teacher just hope you get a good GSI and you'll be fine. I didn't...oh well. avoid Justin Chen for a discussion if you can.

Comment: I don't think I could call Borcherds an interesting or helpful professor because I unfortunately found his lectures slightly boring. He teaches by writing out problems and concepts as he is explaining them, and I could tell that he was an intelligent individual. Sometimes I got frustrated with his classes because he would spend a lot of time on one proof or concept and then explain that it was incorrect or we don't need to know it for Math1A. His class was fair though; some of the exams had tricky questions but nothing totally unexpected.

Comment: Math 1A with Borcherds is not that bad of a class if you have taken high school calculus. In lecture, Borcherds tends to go of in sorts of tangents, so I did not find it useful to go (just hope that you find an awesome GSI). Assignments were fine; he assigned all odd problems and you could check your answers (buy the solutions manual if you can). Quiz difficulty is dependent of your GSI, so the quiz curve can screw you over. Exam-wise, the first two midterms were fair, but he doesn't show any mercy for the final. Math 1A with Borcherds is chill and I definitely recommend it.

Comment: I LOVED Borcherds! He is a funny, adorable, delightful old British dude who flaps around the stage excitedly teaching math. At first glance you can't tell he's a FIELDS MEDALIST. Lecture wasn't really necessary, but I went to them all because I personally found him to be quite entertaining. He makes jokes occasionally and messes up and does other adorably funny things. He wears the same round spectacles, safari shorts, sandals, and dress shirt pretty much every single day. I even saw him running on campus one day! It was hilariously cute. The grading is pretty cool, too. About a third of the class will get As. Easy points: homework was graded on completion/effort (25% of grade), quizzes were okay (25% of grade), 2 midterms were okay (25% of grade), and 1 final (25% of grade. Thing is you could miss a whole midterm and he'll just double your other midterm's score. And he only counts your highest 10 homeworks and quizzes so you can totally bomb a few quizzes or just not turn in a homework assignment or two. I liked this course, despite the fact that I didn't learn nearly as much as I had hoped/expected...

His lectures can be a bit dry but he keeps them interesting with his awesome British accent and stereotypically math professor-esque mannerisms (you will know what I mean if you take him). The probability unit at the end was definitely a highlight because we covered a lot of real world examples and stepped back from the intense math. Homeworks were of manageable length and normally dealt with relatively basic problems. Exams were very similar to homework and extremely doable (although it would have been nice if he had written the time on the board since the classroom had no clock). Highly recommend taking 121 series from Borcherds if possible. For my needs, he has the proper attitude towards it given that I took the class for personal enrichment and not to satisfy a requirement.

Comment: In a refreshing turn of events, this class was apparently designed for all students to succeed. I had a better time than expected in this class given the relatively dull nature of the material (gamma functions, series solutions to differential equations, etc.) A brilliant professor and Fields medal recipient in a completely separate branch of math, he was pragmatic and lighthearted about applied math, and warned us well about his arithmetic errors. Grading was at times almost too good to be true– homework assignments were easy and directly from the Boas textbook, and only a few of the assigned problems were actually examined for grading, meaning that one could complete 50% of the assignment and possibly receive 9/10 points. Exams were similar to homework as forewarned, and contained the same types of problems as the practice exams provided by the professor. Although the averages on these exams were quite high, this professor DOES NOT GRADE ON A USUAL CURVE. Instead, he determines an average grade in some mysterious subjective manner based on how he perceives the class's effort over the course of the semester... this usually works out quite favorably for the students. Lectures were a bit dull, but he provided a 5min break between two halves of the lecture, and kept us awake with amusing historical anecdotes, and in the case of probability theory, numerous examples of ways he could trick us into gambling our money away and making him rich. The class was smaller than 30 people and few of us actually attended all the lectures, but doing so pretty much led to a good grade.
