Comment: Great lecturer, grading on exams was very fair and he tells you how to prepare. Lots of resources for the exams, which by far have the most complex grading system (but makes sense and is very fair). Great class with interesting material.

Comment: I gave a lower rating than it might deserve only because the material Prof. Kihlstrom teaches is incredibly interesting, which is why I believe he could so much more with it than just feed us the facts. Most things that were taught were quite general. It would have been nice to read the research studies. Also, some of his information is slightly out of date. Besides that, the weekly assignment were really easy (they just see if you attended lecture). Exams are only open ended questions, so you really need to know the reading and lecture notes. There aren't any other grades except for participation, so if you screw up one thing you screw up your grade. Just don't screw up. Besides that, cool materialz

Comment: Kihlstrom really knows his stuff and it is a shame he doesn't teach this class every semester. The assignments were just semi-weekly discussion which were really easy and graded on completion. The exams were reasonable if you studied and paid attention in class. The only problem I had with the class is that the amount you participate was graded, but at least it included the extra discussion board posts because I didn't really talk in class.

Comment: I really loved Kihlstrom. Had him for Psych 1 as well, and was just as good this time around (although I found the material for the class less interesting than 1). Still a good class and a great Prof - tests are straightforward and easy (average on the midterm was an 86, final was a 77), weekly homeworks consisting of P/NP forum postings, and he gave a good number of students As (including me).

Comment: Cool guy, seem very knowledgeable about the field. A good chunk of the grade was based on participating in experiments so that relieved a bit of stress. 2/3 of his test questions were also from old exams which were posted on bspace... so I basically just studied the old exams and watched the webcast online and got an A-. You'd probably get higher if you are more engaged in the material

Comment: Kihlstrom is a nice older professor who is very enthusiastic about psychology. He is the reason I chose to major in cognitive science, because he convinced me I had a great interest in learning about the brain. The lectures were engaging overall. At times they were dense with material, but overall very reasonable for a Berkeley lecture. The exams were very straightforward and were from the book or lecture. If you studied, you did well. If you crammed at the last minute, you probably didn't do as well. For anyone considering psychology, Kihlstrom is the way to go!!

Comment: He says the exams will cover broad, main concepts, but the questions were all surprisingly specific and not what I imagined. He also would not meet with one of my friends for office hours, insisting that she just email, even though she really wanted to have a personal conversation and talk about the course face to face.

Comment: never went to lectures and just watched them online. (don't do that. i ended up watching 6 hrs worth of lectures before midterms) as i said. lectures are online. so if you ever missed anything or fell asleep in class, you don't have to panic. exams are pretty fair. he says its half lecture material and half reading. but i'd say it's more like 70% reading. so READ THE BOOKS. or else your gonna look at you exam and be like WTF is this talking about. average grade for exams is about a C- to C. but the other stuff balances it out. so don't fret. lectures do go along with the book, but the book is MUCH MUCH more detailed. and participate in discussion, or else you'll lose around 10 pts, like me. haha. no assignments, but you have to participate in experiments, and do these online things that take like 2 seconds and all you do is keep clicking. easy to get an A or B without trying too hard.

Comment: Kihlstrom is very knowledgeable in his field. Sometimes, he would make funny remarks. I didn't find the assignments too difficult. There was a lot of reading and every week or two a lab would be due. The exams were difficult. Kihstrom says to just know the basic concepts, but the entire book is filled with basic concepts. So, you have to know everything. I failed my first midterm, but still got a B in the class. His curve is generous.

Comment: I went into the class with AP Psych under my belt, thinking it was going to be an easy A and old review. Needless to say, I was quickly set straight by the first midterm. Above all, Kihlstrom's exams are the worst. Never have I taken another less straight-forward exam in my life and his questions are very prone to questions. But to be fair, Kihlstrom DOES provide lots of resources. He has podcasts of his lectures online for those who miss lecture (which I did on a daily basis), he has lecture supplements he writes himself, he has exam reviews also written by himself, and he has several past exams with explanations. In addition, your grade is given a massive boost by RPP, discussions, and ZAPS credit. I ended up with an A- in the class, with 3 measly points from a solid A, but that was considering I never went to lecture, studied the material 2 days before exams, and crammed 3 practice exams into the night before. Stay on top of things and this should be an easy A.

Comment: I thought this class was very good. It is definitely one of those classes that rewards people for studying: questions can be hard, but they come directly from the readings or lectures, and the study guides he provides for the exams are detailed enough that there is no surprise information on the test. There are more than enough resources for students, and he makes it borderline impossible to end up with anything less than a C. (He also ended up curving the class so that anyone with an 89% or above got a solid A). Overall, I though it was very informative, and I ended up with an A.

Comment: Overall, the class should be an easy one as long as you do the textbook readings before the 2 midterms and of course, by the final. The webcasts provided are also really helpful if you miss lecture, so I strongly suggest listening to them. Also, I strongly recommend using the lecture supplements as well if you miss or did not catch everything Kihlstrom says during lecture although the supplements may contain some lengthy snippets of extraneous information (but they're interesting, regardless). Personally, I don't know Kihlstrom that well, but I have had one incident where he was very merciful and understanding of my situation. I accidentally missed my first midterm for this class, and I contacted Kihlstrom immediately. He responded within the hour and told me that there are no make up tests as stated in the course syllabus; however, he will just take the last midterm and final and average out the grades to "estimate" what I may have scored on my missed midterm. Overall, this class goes more in depth than AP Psychology, although a good portion of the class is like an AP psych review. Strongly suggest taking this class if you are interested in exploring the different fields and branches within psychology, especially if it's your intended major and you have passed out of this required class.

Comment: Easily one of the most confident, knowledgeable professors I've come across. Knows his stuff well and leads a well-paced class. Kihlstrom is open to all questions (he directs them to his forum so everyone can see the question/answer) and has past exams posted up, so the tests are definitely reasonable. Completely fair grader (curves but in a different way; takes out "bad items" ie. items that even those who aced the exam missed, for example).

Comment: My main criticism is that Kihlstrom is a really boring lecturer. It's impossible for me to stay awake in his lectures, partly due to his voice and partly due to his lecture style. However, I will say that the assignments are easy and the tests are straightforward. If you know the material covered in reading and lecture, you'll do well on the test. Kihlstrom's responsiveness (and thoroughness of responses) to questions on Bspace is also quite impressive.

Comment: Take this professor now. Interesting content and fair exams (he removes questions if most people get them wrong, and he also added 4 percent to everyone's midterm because it seemed to long - in the end he gave out a very fair number of As, though no A+s, sad I know). I had Psych 1 with him too, and enjoyed him just as much this time around. Highly recommended.
