Comment: Amazing professor and class. So Enthusiastic, and really cared about teaching folklore. Every lecture was interesting, and I couldn't wait to go to class. One of the best classes at Cal. Be prepared for a large reading load and a big folklore composition, along with written exams.

Comment: He is very passionate about his work and what he researches. However he is very boring, I am not going to lie, everytime I attended his lectures I was asleep. The first lecture is very interesting and makes you excited. If you are a humanities major you will definitely love his class. For more science-interested beings it might be very boring. You don't need to attend lecture to get an A in the class. However when studying for midterms and lectures best to divide the study guide within a study group. It will save your life and make time so you can study for other classes. The study guides he or your gsi's provide you with are priceless. Just memorize them. You will get an A. And don't procrastinate on the collection project.

Comment: I came in thinking this might be a very interesting class. However, the majority of readings were incredibly dry and boring, and most of the folklore topics discussed were no better than bs. Also, Briggs assigns a ton of readings for each lecture, and you are expected to memorize and regurgitate everything on the midterm and final. Make sure to start the project assignment early -- it's relatively easy, but it is a HUGE assignment and takes quite a long time to finish. Overall, I think this is a good class if you're willing to put hours into memorizing everything; otherwise I would not recommend this class.

Comment: This class isn't very well constructed. The professor tries to be enthusiastic. It was brought down because it was a 90 minute class in the evening and people wanted to go home. Exams aren't too bad -- make sure you do the readings and start your collections early. GSIs aren't the best, but they do try to squeeze all the information they can in a 50 minute discussion.

Comment: The content is really interesting, but the class is so huge that it can seem a little hard to get really engaged in lecture. There's just not enough time in lectures to have a discussion or ask many questions. Briggs is a really entertaining lecturer, and if you always go to class you'll notice he gives hints about whats on tests!!

Comment: The lectures can be kind of boring sometimes, but Briggs can also be pretty funny. You can definitely get away with not doing most of the reading and still get an A. But discussion sections are pretty pointless unless you at least know the premise and basic through-line of that week's readings.

Comment: Briggs himself is a very cool professor, funny and very enthusiastic. However this class is not interesting in my opinion. You may want to take that with a grain of salt since I'm an engineer. There aren't really any assignments to do. Just readings, and your project due at the end of the semester. The readings are so dry and I feel like the analysis in them isn't very deep and find myself asking why the hell am i reading this. And the GSIs are not helpful at all because they like to use big words instead of just being straightforward when explaining concepts. Exams are all written, but if you know everything in the study guide given you will be fine. Project is really lame to me, but if you like collecting folklore and anthro stuff maybe you will enjoy it.

Comment: This man is the most enthusiastic, loud, hand-wavy, joke-telling, please-for-the-love-of-God-listen-and-LIKE-me professor I've ever had. A lot of the class is about performance, so perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that that's how his whole lecture comes off: like an exaggerated and overblown performance. It gets old fast, but at least he doesn't speak in a monotone. Fairly clear lectures, reasonable pacing (especially if you have a laptop), assignments are almost entirely reading and one project where you have to document 10 pieces of folklore you and you're friends say/perform over the course of the semester and briefly analyze them. Expectations for the exams are reasonable.
