Comment: For lectures, Holston puts up a word document outlining the topics he was going to go over. Most of the students just typed down exactly what was on there and nothing else. I don't recommend doing that because it doesn't fully explain the concepts or significance behind them. The readings were super interesting but his lectures were pretty boring at times. I recommend doing the readings before class to get a better sense of what he's talking about. We had one take home midterm which everyone rejoiced in the idea at first but dreaded it once we found out it was a 6-8? page paper which included short identifications and 2/3? essays. The final was the same format. We also had 2 projects which were immigration essays. Overall, the class was not too bad. Studied for the final the night before and bs'd the projects and still ended up with an A.

Comment: James was a really cool professor and he's a good speaker. Disclaimer: he doesn't post anything up on courses other than readings so you can't really keep up with the content if you miss a whole bunch of class. I had Geoffrey as my GSI and he was super helpful and nice - great GSI. Assignments were easy to do well on, if you read/went to class - you still need to but in a bit of time and effort to the assignments to get an A though. Lots of reading, although not completely necessary to keep up with it every week - it was good to know the readings a little bit for discussions and assignments.
