Comment: The homework is difficult but pertinent and the professor has interesting lectures. It might be a little more difficult than you'd think.

Comment: Unless you are in CED and have no choice, don't take this class. So much work for a 3 unit class and the whole point is to throw you off your game, allowing you to experience what the field of architecture might be like. The assignments are really vague and GSIs actively try to not help you. The lectures were interesting and so were some of the texts. However, just know that this is NOT in any way an easy class—time consuming assignments due every week, readings for every lecture in a fat reader (bigger than most humanities readers), and overall bad vibes. Talk to people who have taken it and really know what you are getting yourself into before you're past the drop deadline. Best advice: beware that this demands tedious collaging (cutting and gluing tiny pieces of paper) more than anything else. If you're down with that, go for it.

Comment: I love Nicholas! He's really humorous and makes the lectures very interesting. The assignments take soooo much time and thoughts, regarding it's a 3-unit course, but they are worth your effort.

Comment: I really loved this class, but the workload was pretty heavy for just three units. The GSIs were extremely helpful in critiquing work and helping understand the readings.

Comment: I LOVE de Monchaux. His lectures are amazing! He's engaging, he's fun, he's a little pot bellied hobbit thing and that's freaking cool. Although I do have a lot of complaints for this class, it is nothing that is worth throwing this class away. They're whiny complaints. This class was amazing and I don't regret it one bit. So: Lectures: He's real cool about it. Powerpoints, sure, but they have movie clips, music videos, and other cool stuff about it. Definitely pay attention, because that's what your midterms/exams are based off of and you're kinda fucked if you don't remember anything from lecture. Oh, and you're also required to come. They'll take attendance. But I never wanted to miss one of his lectures :) One day will be him lecturing on the week's material. Its kinda sketch when you think about it piece by piece, but in the end you figure out how wonderfully each lecture comes into place. Like a bunch of puzzle pieces thrown at you, and you don't know what the hell it is, but then you put it together and its a fuzzy kitten or something. The other days will be dedicated to showing/discussing the works of others. That was cool too. Work: The sketch book assignments aren't drawings. If you wanna draw, go somewhere else, for real. They are collages. Oh, and he makes you buy all these materials but for real all you need is the sketchbook, a straight edge, triangles, x-acto knife, and the blue pencil. Oh and rubber cement. Thank sweet jesus for rubber cement. BUT they will take FOREVER and their (de Monchaux and the GSI's) taste will change from week to week. Assignments are like the lectures, puzzle pieces, etc, etc. Exams: UGH. I seriously missed physics/math exams after these. At least then, you know whether or not you failed. With this, NO CLUE. They're all so cool and chill though. But if you take it, take it P/NP if you can man. Or else you'll dedicate your life to the damn readings (which are actually super cool) and the sketchbook assignments.

Comment: What makes de Monchaux a good professor is his ability to bring across his point well in a very interesting way. He is a very design-oriented professor for this class and that makes it all the better. He makes lectures fairly engaging but the assignments take a great deal of time if you want to do well in the course. If you want to take the class and are outside CED, then either take it P/NP or be prepared to devote your Sundays solely to the weekly projects. They were also kind of vague in terms of what they were looking for in the midterms (take-homes that you have ~17 hours to do). Other than that, Nicholas is a very interesting guy who you want to critique your work. It is a great feeling when you impress him when you are called up in front of the class to show/describe your weekly sketchbook assignment (never actually sketches). He is only in the Spring and well worth the wait.

Comment: De Monchaux is such an interesting guy. He is so quirky and odd and brilliant. His assigned projects were fun to work on and where he lacks in approachability his GSIs pick up.

Comment: A fun class but A LOT of work for a 3 unit class. Sketch assignments can take hours. Tons of reading. Lectures can drag on sometimes. If you're interested in this kind of stuff and enjoy creative assignments, this is a good class. If not, I'd suggest you take something else.

Comment: I LOVE Nicholas De Monchaux. His lectures are amazing. The assignments are interesting and challenging. And the class overall will prepare you with a wide frame of reference. The final project when I took ED1 was carving a city out of a book. Even though it took forever, the results were so cool and completely worth it. If you take the class, be prepared for how much time it takes.
