Comment: Professor Castillo shines a keen conceptual light on the history of modern architecture and injects a range of intriguing ways to look at architecture (and design in general) as an integrated part of culture – both a driver of and an artifact of socio-political shifts. For me this provided wonderful jumping off points for further development of my ideas. In any course this large, the GSI makes a big difference too. He selects and attracts excellent GSIs, and mine was phenomenal. The assignments and exams gave me ample creative latitude and helped me hone ideas that I'm carrying into grad school. Exams were 90% about testing our grasp of concepts, 10% memorization. I made an A in the course. I didn't do all of the reading, but made sure I at least perused it so that I could extract the core ideas. I met with Professor Castillo and my GSI in office hours numerous times, and found their input quite helpful for keeping me on track to do well.

Comment: Castillo's lectures, as he and Crawford switch off and on in who gives them for 170B, are by far the highlight of the course. He has a more fundamental knowledge of the material and can provide and explain it in a very engaging way. Assignments and exams are always fair; you just have to pay attention in lecture; honestly, the readings seem to be quite supplemental. I will be getting at least an A- in the course (I have yet to take the final) and the reading effort I have put in has progressively declined. A very good course overall, but not nearly as good as Shanken's 170A.

Comment: Boring lecturer in a dark room is not a good combination. The class tests are pure memorization.

Comment: Castillo is not a very good professor. He's disorganized, starts late, and never finishes the material, rushing to the very end, and going over nearly every lecture. He does try hard though and is somewhat enthusiastic, however, I don't find his lectures very good. He's really nice, but doesn't even hold office hours! Only take 170B from him if you have no other choice.
