ASTRON 7A (Fall 2012)

Comment: Professor Chiang is pretty awesome at making analogies to make students understand pretty complex physics. His problem sets were fairly long, although he always provided a bunch of background 'fluff' information about the problem (which personally I normally found pretty interesting to read). His exams were really straightforward and easy (to the point where I thought they weren't challenging enough at times) and he used to provide formula sheets for them. He's also very approachable outside class, and peppers his lectures and assignments with some hilarious pop culture references. Take an astronomy class with him if you can!

Comment: He's a great professor, and really knows how to engage the class. Best professor I've had this semester. You should keep up with the readings, and just generally make sure you really know what's going on. The class is pretty challenging, lots of material, but if you keep up, it's enjoyable.

Comment: Its starts out really super hard, he goes into quantum and stuff like that, and the homework is pretty impossible, but there are resources you can use like TALC

Comment: Chiang is one of those professors who you will probably love if you are doing well, but absolutely hate if you are struggling. I fell into the latter category. This class should not be taken lightly. It requires a lot of knowledge about multivariable calculus, optics, and chemistry. I recommend taking these classes before 7A. He assumes that you grasp the material well the first time you hear it and sort of gets annoyed with questions. His demeanor is very aloof. But he is energetic and very passionate.

Comment: Chiang was the best science professor I've had in my three years here. I feel like he really understands how students think and comprehend things, and he made many difficult concepts easy for me to grasp. He is also extremely friendly, funny, energetic, and easy to talk to. All the homeworks and tests are based directly off lecture notes, so go to class!

Comment: The best physical science teacher I've had here at Berkeley. Very passionate about his field. The class moves at a fairly fast pace, but his lectures are so engaging that it's difficult to fall behind. The midterms were pretty fair, the final was noticeably harder. Homework assignments are also pretty fair because of TALC sessions. Did an amazing job of making conceptually difficult material easier to understand. The class setting is quite intimate as not many people take this class. Would definitely recommend if you were a physical science major, not so much if you are not.

Comment: Eugene is hands down the best professor I've had at Berkeley. He is seriously the nicest guy ever and made an effort to learn the names and faces of everyone in class. He utilizes colored chalk and the board perfectly without writing too much or too little. My note-taking style was just literally copying everything he wrote on the board verbatim and it was exactly enough to help me study. He makes the course entirely lecture-based, and the readings from Ryden/Petersn or Carroll/Ostlie weren't helpful. A question that a lot of people have is "Can I take Astro 7B if I haven't taken 7A first?" 7B doesn't build upon 7A, nor does it require math/physics background as extensive as 53/54 or Physics 7B/7C, so I would say that a motivated student with a background in Physics 7A would be able to succeed in Astro 7B without the prereqs. This is a great class for even non-Astro STEM majors. Eugene is an amazing lecturer and anyone can benefit from understanding the Universe a little bit better.

Comment: Eugene is awesome. He is easily one of the best professors at Berkeley and I learned more physics in this class than some of my actual physics classes. His lecture style is theatrical, engaging, and entertaining. It makes you want to catch every word of every lecture. Consequently, my notes for this class were dense and ended up being crucial for learning material. He writes all his problem sets, which were tailored to the week's topic and very well presented. However, some of them were a bit tedious and involved reading numbers off a graph or measuring the size of a galaxy, but there was a purpose in the end. His exams were all very fair. If you understand the homework and are good with memorizing some basic equations and numbers then you will be fine. He also asks questions during class that are similar to those on an exam. He won a distinguished teaching award this semester and it was well deserved. I highly recommend taking a class with Eugene, you will learn a lot and enjoy yourself along the way.

Comment: I found this class to be significantly harder than Astro 7A and found the homework to be impossible. If you don't go to homework collaboration sessions then you will find the class to be very difficult. The textbook was nearly useless.

Comment: Order of Magnitude physics is definitely an eye-opener and highly recommended for all to-be scientists. The course covers a huge amount of topics and gives you insight to so many topics in pure and applied physics. Eugene was very enthusiastic about the material and is always helpful and open to comments in class. The problem sets and the exam were very interesting as they often cover topics you'd never thought calculable. Absolutely amazing class.
