Comment: GSI's were useful for doing the homework. His lectures were often conducive to sleeping though because of the fact that it was a 3:30 lecture and the room was dimmed. He wasn't too exciting.

Comment: Lectures were very helpful. First year they used a book, book was pretty useless but as long as u go through lecture notes and discussion notes you should be okay for hte midterms. Final was a take home so u had all resources available to you

Comment: Kumar was a great lecturer, although the material did get a bit tedious at times. The material was rather disjointed, though this had to do with the horrible textbook, Biomedical Engineering. Although the exams are not particularly difficult, the average student is really smart--don't expect much of a curve. The worst part of the class were the long assignments that were graded on accuracy (and no answers at the back of the book). The discussion section was not particularly helpful-- it basically reiterated the material covered in the lecture. I would only suggest going to the sections immediately before the midterms, if at all, because all the review sheets are put online. Overall, a good introductory course that fulfilled its purpose of giving an overview of bioengineering.

Comment: Kumar's a great lecturer (though his voice sometimes is monotonous). The exams are all right, not too hard, not too easy. That said, BioE people are really smart, so don't expect much sympathy from the curve. It's a great course, but I do feel that: 1. The GSIs suck. No joke. Section is a total waste of time, and people stop going after a few weeks. 2. The subject matter is too disjointed. He talks about a lot of different topics without giving you an understanding of why you should care about it. As such, you'll probably end up zoning out in lecture. A lot.

Comment: Kumar is a really cool person and does interesting research. He's a great lecturer too. The exams are easy if you know exactly how to do the homework problems.

Comment: I decided to take this class because I was fascinated with Kumar's research in microenvironment's role in tumor formation. I went to a graduate seminar and his research was very interesting. However, his class is far less interesting. The major drawback for the course is how it is an overview of everything, but nothing specifically. The lectures ends up being very very brief summary of all the biochemistry concepts without any details. His presentation style gets annoying as well. He tends to survey the class about their knowledge about the area. So it ends up being a few freshmen showing off their knowledge every time he asks a question. The exam a little bit harder than anticipated in the sense that it was very time constraint. But all the questions were fair and nothing unexpected. Overall, a good professor teaching a wrong course.

Comment: He's a good teacher. Very knowledgeable about the subject area. The course is basically basic MCB and BioChem. A good math background, especially a good understanding of calc comes in very useful, or you might end up lost. Course is engaging. He explains things very well, derives all the major equations you use.. The homework is extremely long, and is a pain. The exams are semi difficult, but nothing far too difficult to handle.

Comment: The course is a fusion of BioAP and PreCalc. A very good introduction to the mixing of biological and mathematical principles; this is a course for all experience levels in biosciences, so be aware that some of the material will seem like extensive review. Dr. Kumar as a professor engages the class well and does a uniquely good job of linking lecture material with research at BerkeleyBioE.

Comment: He's very enthusiastic but the material can get intense. Exams are not bad, but you really gotta know your stuff. If you've taken AP Bio, AP Physics C Mech/E&M, AP Chem, and AP Calc, you should be fine in the class. Lectures can get boring since topics jump from one to the other. The class itself is pretty unorganized (NOBODY went to section), but everything was doable. The final was take-home!

Comment: A breath of fresh air after having Conboy; he has no accent and is much easier to understand. His powerpoint lectures are clear and well organized and lectures are interesting. The final is open book/note, which was much easier than Conboy's midterm.

Comment: Professor Kumar is an outstanding professor. He knows his subject really well and effectively explains his knowledge to students. The qualitative part of this course well prepares you a good foundation for advanced biology aspect, and the quantitative part forms a strong foundation for research and clinical studies. Recommend this class to anyone who is interested in physiology aspect in research and med school.

Comment: Exams are fair, but difficult, and there is a significant time crunch. Despite that, the averages are generally in the 80-85 range. Your most important tool for them is to make really good cheat sheets (1 sheet for MT1, 2 for MT2, 3 for final). Problem sets were really helpful for studying, and in general were really easy -- they took max 1.5hrs and there were 4 in the semester. Class material is geared towards premeds; he talks about the MCAT so much you could make it into a drinking game.

Comment: Kumar is very clear during his lectures, but his monotonous voice sometimes can put you easily to sleep. His homeworks are very simple and are just variations of past exams. His exams are difficult and very time constrained. You really need to know EVERYTHING to do the exams. Thorough knowledge of mechanisms, diseases, and inhibitors are required.

Comment: Although he seemed to like teaching, he wasnot very charismatic. But he is clear and knows his stuff. Most of the equations you are going to need for the exam are in his notes. Study the lecture material and understand it well. During the exam time, make sure you answer fast... stalling is not an option since you are definitely going to be short on time, especially on the first exam.

Comment: Kumar is a great teacher and makes this a great course. He is honest and direct with students and clearly has a passion for the topics in the class. The only complaint from the Spring 2011 class was a terrible classroom, but I know that Sanjay is doing his best to change it for next year.

Comment: His tests are composed of MANY easy math problems. You get a cheat sheet on which you can cram information and equations. His class is directed to premeds and gives NO engineering principles whatsoever. He talks pretty fast but he's enthusiastic about the subject. Problem sets were a bunch of busy work and unit conversions.

Comment: His stem cell decal class is really interesting (and that's saying something, as I'm a chemical engineering major). He isn't too enthusiastic, but can't blame the guy because it's just a discussion for a decal. As long as you just do all the assignments (which literally take 10 minutes per week. that's it.), then you'll be more than fine.
