Comment: I loved prof. Maboudian! She had a bunch of endearing quirks that some students found annoying but for many made the class much more engaging, amusing, and enjoyable. Honestly, thermodynamics is kind of impossible to teach well, because it has so many nuances and subtleties that no amount of notes and lectures can really prepare you for solving any problem thrown your way. Nevertheless, Maboudian did a pretty good job, especially towards the end of the course, which covered chemical thermodynamics and was definitely the most challenging part of the course. She covered derivations extensively during lecture, which she encouraged us to re-derive on our own (fortunately, almost nobody does). Problem sets and exams were written by GSIs, who did a good job. The two midterms were very challenging but completely fair. The final was more challenging and not as fair but in the end the curve seemed to save us all. All in all, this was a really fun class, in my opinion much better than 150A.

Comment: Material-wise, I personally really liked this class. Maboudian was a decent professor in that her lecture notes made sense, but she had no sense of following the textbook and the problem sets were often rather unrelated to the material. Problem sets didn't take a lot of time, as the answers were given to you if you ever got stuck, but the exam questions were often tricky and long for the 80 minutes you are given to complete it. The grading curve at the end of the semester was lenient considering the final was very difficult. Make sure to rework every practice exam you can find for the midterms and finals, because that's really the only way to (sort of) prepare for a class like this. Much better than 150A in my opinion content-wise and grading-wise, but Maboudian wasn't a great professor when it came to teaching concepts.

Comment: Maboudian is not as bad as people make her out to be. She has an accent and lecture can be quite boring, but she is a very nice person and a good professor. Definitely the hardest ChemE class so far (I'm reviewing this after taking 142 and 150b). The first midterm was extremely difficult, the second one pretty hard, and the final was very hard again. The curve was amazing at the end. Problem sets do not take as long as they do in other classes, but they are not that helpful as the exams tend to throw unfamiliar situations at you where you have to apply the concepts taught in the class. The GSIs were very helpful, so do attend section! It helps a lot! The material in this class is very theoretical and there is a lot of involved math, but it is pretty interesting.

Comment: Kinda hard to understand her pronunciation in the beginning but you can use to it. Her lecture is not the most important thing but it's good to attend. Her midterm can be quite hard but they are based on homeworks and discussion materials.

Comment: I do not think she did a good job in giving hws and giving exams, all her exams and hws are given by GSI

Comment: Sophomore year, Spring semester has you taking ChemE 141 and 150A. It's often said that 141 is the "Chemical" part, and 150A the "Engineering" part. I suppose to some degree that's correct, it gets truer and truer towards the end. 141 will have you revisiting concepts from most of your past classes like heat cycles/work/energy from 7B, heats of formation from high school/140/4A, composition, etc. The topics are diverse enough that it's likely that there's something you ROCK at, but something else you cannot do to save your life. Maboudian's exams are... tricky, I dunno. At first glance they seem very straightforward, and even though it's the EXACT type of problem you knew to expect, you didn't study it. Try not to focus too much on learning little details and minor formulas that were mentioned once; the exams will cover exactly what you'd expect they would. Problem sets are standard, take a long time and if you leave them to the last minute you'll be staying up for a while. Our GSIs were extremely helpful and always willing to give aid; I hope you have the same. Not a bad class, as far as ChemE goes.

Comment: Thermo just seems to be one of those classes that I just have trouble understanding, and unfortunately Maboudian just isn't the best professor, at least in terms of helping me to learn. Her lectures, while organized, just fail to convey the concepts in a meaningful manner. Maboudian's really nice and means well, but she goes way too fast in her derivations and skips a lot of steps, and doesn't really explain the big picture /concepts too well. Half the time I'm just madly scribbling down what she writes down on the board. She's a bit hard to understand (both in terms of her accent and how she tries to explain things). There's weekly problem sets, they're pretty hard and take up quite a bit of time each week, although a large chunk of the HW grading seems to be based on effort. The textbook is pretty bad for the most part, although there's examples and equations here and there that can be helpful. Midterms are bad, realistically you can't really expect to come anywhere close to finishing, and the problems are long and complicated. Overall a pretty bad class, but every chemE has to take it so you just kinda have to buckle down and get through it.

Comment: Maboudian was a great lecturer, though quirky at some times. She definitely knows what she's doing, although when looking back on the lecture notes to do the homework I'd often be very confused. The thing is, for thermo, you can understand the concepts pretty easily (and Maboudian does a good job explaining these concepts in lecture), although applying them is a different story. The hardest part about thermo is getting practice with problems. It is really up to you to understand how to apply thermodynamics to problem solving, something I had wished I had understood earlier in the course. Exams were challenging but overall I think this was a good thing (the curve saves you). Homeworks were actually pretty easy upon seeing the solutions, although I thought they were difficult at first since you need to take it upon yourself to do practice problems and learn how to apply the concepts from lecture.

Comment: Lectures help A LOT as far as homework assignments go, but they can get pretty boring. Midterms were ok, as was the final. Thermo is really something you either get or don't, so reading the book in detail will help.
