Comment: Took with Blanch and Alesandrini Fall 2013. This was Harvey Blanch's last time teaching as he retired after this semester. Good class for ChemE's interested in industrial scale bio-processing plants and biochemical production. The choice of topics for the design project included production or biodiesel, butane-diol, butanol, monoclonal antibody, and polylactic acid. We used SuperPro to model our processes. Once you get the hang of it its pretty easy to use. The projects were in groups of 3 and we were able to choose our own partners. We'd rotate being lead presenter for the oral reports. Blanch and the GSI's were very helpful in giving advice on our designs but were pretty vague about other class details. We could never tell how we were doing grade-wise until the end of the class. This is a pretty watered down course in terms of what industry would expect. I didn't feel like we did anything worthwhile except learn how to use SuperPro to optimize the process design, but I guess that's how the class was supposed to be. Would have liked more feedback from Blanch on more specific things like equipment sizing and cost stuff regarding out project.
