Comment: Pretty unclear about the class. It's supposedly suitable to anyone... but don't take this class unless you do research in the field or are otherwise very knowledgeable about BioFuels. Smit is a very unresponsive professor as well.

Comment: I think Smit wants to help but is just a bit oblivious. The problem sets tend to be inaccessible, ill-defined, and confusing and lectures are an odd mix of powerpoint and scrawled notes. The midterms were long but pretty easy (written by the GSIs). The final was terrible and emphasized trivial material that received little focus. Also, no notes are allowed for any tests, which is annoying for thermo.

Comment: Unhelpful lecturer, though he is a nice guy. As long as you can do the homework yourself and actually understand the steps involved, the exams aren't bad.

Comment: His lectures are pretty useless but he really cares. Go to office hours.

Comment: I took the Biomass Energy class as Chem C138 Fall '12 because it related to what I do in undergrad research. Pretty much what I expected. Kind of like a freshman seminar format with professors and people in the biomass energy field giving presentations of their research and other talks. I liked how some pretty big names in the bioenergy field like Jay Keasling were presenters. Each lecture a new person would speak and present a different aspect of biomass energy ranging from the deconstruction of biomass to the nitty-gritty economics and life-cycle analysis of biomass energy. It truly provided a good overview of what biomass energy was all about. Easy A in this class and you dont even ahve to show up half the time to lecture. Granted I knew a bit about biomass energy before I took the class so the homework assignments were not as bad. I didnt like how homework was assigned as group projects. It was a bit difficult to schedule around everyone in our groups. Would highly recommend if you want to get your feet wet in biomass energy or want to see what biomass energy is about at a fairly basic level. Would recommend if you are chemE, or chem major. Some stuff may be beyond the scope of other majors especially the chemical kinetics and other detailed things like mass and energy balances only chemE's are pretty familiar with. No exams in this class.
