Comment: Bertozzi was an amazing lecturer!!! She is so passionate about the material!!!! Her first midterm was fair, but the second one was crazy. I feel like this was the case because it was right after spring break and because the test covered chemical synthesis!!! The final was beyond fair though. Anyways, she inspired me to pursue a career in science. Now it is funny because I tutor for Chem 3A :D

Comment: Chem3A is a pretty hard class, but in my opinion, it is the more interesting one out of the Chem3 series. In this class, you learn more general concepts and theory instead of specific reactions like you do in 3B. Some highlights of this course include learning about hyperconjugation and rotations around bonds. The theory gives you a deeper understanding of the atomic world and offers some explanations for why certain reactions proceed while other do not.

Comment: Bertozzi is absolutely amazing. I think everyone could tell that she genuinely wanted all of us to succeed. Her teaching style is impeccable. She goes through everything very thoroughly and writes everything out on the board. Before the midterms, she gives you an outline of every single TYPE of question that will be on the midterm. However, her midterms (especially the second one with an average of 40%) are pretty difficult. Even though you know the type of question, it is tweaked to be difficult. However, I do think her exams are very fair and if you do A LOT of practicing then you will be set. Also, her grading is pretty generous. I think that for the final she took into account how well you did compared to the 2 midterms and judged you accordingly which is cool. She is the nicest person in the world. Even though organic chemistry is difficult, you can't hate her because she is that amazing. I took this my spring semester freshmen year and I can say that she will probably be one of the best teachers I think I'll ever experience at Cal. She definitely has raised the standard for teaching extremely high.

Comment: Professor Bertozzi is an amazing lecturer, and was completely organized and clear in every single class. I don't think I ever heard her say "um" in the entire semester. The concepts were hard, especially synthesis, but if you practiced a lot using the past midterms and pederson's workbook, then you will definitely get a decent score. She was really enthusiastic about chemistry, and she was able to get me interested in it as well.

Comment: GREAT lecturer. She was VERY enthusiastic for all her lectures and had funny/memorable ways to remember certain reactions. She goes over lecture material during office hours, so go to those if hearing the material twice helps. She also gives you a 5-10 min break in the middle of lecture, which is AMAZING (quick naptime! c: ) Exams, however, were difficult and tricky, and clearly required you to truly understand the material. Don't flake on the first midterm, it's the easiest one! Also, do all of the practice problems that she posts online, those are the most similar to her exams.

Comment: The best professor I have had so far at Cal. She just blows my mind with her intelligence, humor, lecturing style, and high expectations of her students. She honestly wants us to learn and like the material, and has a lot of interesting anecdotes. The grade breakdown was pretty scary, though, (25% first midterm, 25% second midterm, 50% final), but I think she went easy on us in the end - the final was much easier than the second midterm. If you're going to take the class with her, be prepared to do it right.

Comment: Practice mechanism and synthesis problems frequently and repetitively, and you should be able to memorize all of the reagents and catalysts. The exams are mostly on how well you understand certain reactions (that are quite common on worksheets, textbooks and exams), so if you can drill them into your head, then you should be able to score fairly high on the tests.

Really enthusiastic about what she teaches and that really showed in her lectures, which were interesting, organized, and explained the main concepts clearly. She really made ochem an interesting class by providing applications of chem in everyday life. It's really up to you to keep up though since your grade is determined only by 2 midterms and a final. Her first midterm was pretty fair, but the second one was terribly difficult, although her final was a bit better. In the end, she was pretty generous with the curve though.

Comment: AMAZING LECTURER AND BRILLIANT PROFESSOR. She really is the most amazing professor I've had at Cal so far. Professor Bertozzi is so enthusiastic about ochem and she really wants everyone to succeed. Her lectures are very engaging and fascinating to listen to, especially because Professor Bertozzi she shows how ochem can be applied to everything in everyday life by bringing up biological examples throughout her lectures. Granted, although Bertozzi is a brilliant lecturer, her exams are quite difficult. The average for her first midterm was a 74, but the average for her second midterm was a 40... I don't know if I just studied a lot more for the final, but I felt that the final was very fair and not impossible.

Comment: Basically the best chem teacher/professor I've ever had. She was an excellent lecturer, wrote everything on the chalkboards, had neat handwriting, was easy to understand, and was clearly passionate and enthusiastic about the material. Her occasional projector slides went over the biological applications of ochem and were fascinating. She did go through the material quickly, thought this was due mostly to the ridiculous amount of material she wanted to cover. Exams were difficult, though very straightforward. She made her expectations very clear, and in fact ran through each of the questions on the test beforehand so we knew what types of problems to expect. If you practiced beforehand (not just the week before tests), then you should have done well on the exams. We were given and had access to plenty of practice material: the textbook, Bspace problems, and Pederson workbook problems. The subject itself is pretty daunting, with a ridiculous number of mechanisms, reagents, and interactions we are expected to know. Just practice a lot, and it'll become second nature.

Comment: Bertozzi is an amazing professor. she's really funny and makes the material very interesting to learn. the practice problems that she and the head gsi posted were the most helpful practice problems you can get. their level of difficulty was closest to how difficult the tests were. pedersen problems and book problems were totally useless because they were nothing like hers. her tests were extremely difficult, but i think she was fair with the curve at the end. her previous practice exams are good to get an idea of how difficult her tests are, but i think the tests she gave us were harder than her previous tests. she did an amazing job for someone who hasn't taught the class since 1999!

Comment: Bertozzi is a great lecturer. She has a true passion for the subject making ochem a bearable class. Just make sure you go to each lecture and write down all the notes + little side notes of interesting facts she gives you (they pop up on the multiple choice questions on the exam). Exams are definitely tough but fair. The class is fast paced especially towards the middle so make sure you're doing practice problems throughout the semester. No need for the book unless you're unclear about concepts. And Vollhardt practice problems aren't one bit like hers. Do her practice problem sets and past exams, understand them, do it over again and you should do fine. I recommend the SLC study groups too.

Comment: One of the best Chem professors I've had. She's incredibly knowledgeable in what she teaches, integrates some real life examples of Chem applications into her lectures, and makes Chem lectures interesting and engaging. Lectures are well paced and organized. Tough exams, but doable if you keep up with the lectures and material covered. She gives very helpful practice questions and old exams. Vollhardt textbook is helpful if you need further practice, but for me, I didn't feel that it's necessary as long as you go to lecture, review her lecture notes, and do the practice problems she puts on bSpace. Her GSIs are helpful, too, and since she makes GSIs available to all students (so you don't have to just go to the GSI you have for 3AL lab), there will always be someone in the Chem office hours room to help everyday of the week. Very highly recommended class and professor.

Comment: Absolutely genious (look her up on google). I am so lucky to have her for chem 3A. She's very clear in her lectures and has a witty sense of humor that keeps you awake in class. She makes the mechanisms so much easier to understand! Her exams are HARD though (the second one) because there is just so much to remember and her pacing is VERY fast in the second half (when it gets to different types of reactions). These are not things you can memorize--you NEED TO DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS!!! This is one of those classes where slacking off will hurt you very badly. Our last midterm had an average of 40 (out of 100) just to put things in perspective. I wish i paid closer attention in class though--she is really amazing.

Comment: One of the best and funniest/entertaining lecturers I've ever had so far in UCB. However, her exams are extremely difficult as I consequently learned without studying very much-- I recommend (probably for myself) and to future chem 3A students to STUDY AS YOU GO ALONG IN LECTURES. You can't cram for this class, I promise you, especially if chemistry is your weak subject as it is mine. She teaches on the blackboard and talks pretty fast, so make sure you're ready to go when you sit down in Pimentel to vigorously focus and/or take notes. She writes a lot of reactions on the boards, although I think listening to her explanations for why the reactions are so are just as important to catch and jot down. She posts recommended problems and past final exams she has given on bspace, but there are a lot of problems (which seems kind of overwhelming at times) and her past finals from the late 90s does not perfectly overlap with the material you may have covered, so DO NOT rely solely on doing past exam problems in prepping for the exams!!! Again, my best word of advice is DON'T fall behind and do the reading from the textbook if you are utterly lost and barely keeping up in lectures. Seriously.

Comment: I love Bertozzi! She reminds me of Ellen Degeneres up on that stage of hers. She is a very good lecturer and quite entertaining. However, she hasn't taught in about ten years, so she still just uses only the black board and does not upload any notes online and there are no podcasts. So if you don't go to lecture if you are sick/whatever, you are kinda screwed and hopefully you have a friend that will let you share notes. First midterm was good, but the second midterm is hell! Beware! Hopefully the final exam is not as bad....
