Comment: Interesting class when an interesting professor presents their research, so basically each week is very, very different.

Comment: Class was very easy, but not really useful. The project at the end was not really worth it.

Comment: This is a useless class which I believe should be abolished. The College of Chemistry should reallocate its resources elsewhere. We should reallocate our efforts elsewhere. The course consisted of a different lecturer each week who introduced us to their field and research interest. Following this, a weekly question would be assigned. One week, we were asked how we would cure cancer. Needless to say, most everyone BS-ed their answers each week. The final project for my group personally was pretty cool. We were assigned a friendly graduate student to interview about his lab/research group, and we created a poster summarizing his answers. We're not expected of a lot when it comes to presenting our findings during the poster session at the end of the semester. To sum everything up-->frustrating, useless class.

Comment: This seminar was extremely easy and boring at the same time. Listening to lecturers discuss their research was fun and interesting, but the class time seemed to occur when everyone wanted to nap. Boering was happy and enthusiastic, but the class simply had very little substance. There was no final exam, but the project at the end of the semester was seemingly easy.

Comment: She likes the stuff that she studies. Not the best explainer, but she's nice. Also, watch out = her exam was the trickiest.

Comment: Teacher was excellent, very enthuastic and a great lecturer. Unfortunately, there was not that much material to cover in class, and thus it ended up being boring. Very very easy. Tests were a no brainer (100% on midterm + final without a sweat). Most of the grade depends on your GSI.

Comment: Pretty much goes along with Chem 4A. There were guest lecturers every week explaining his/her field of research and it sure made me quit CoC since none of them were interesting. I'm not saying the class was bad - it is an assessment of how much you are into chemistry. The weekly responses and the final project were quite BS in my opinion..

Comment: A really neat seminar where a different guest speaker from the COC would come and give a lecture on their work within the college. A very relaxed course and it helped me gain insight into the research that I would like to work on in the upcoming years.

Comment: Great, interesting, and enthusiastic professor. I only wish that she had selected fewer chemical engineering professors to visit and a few more of other areas.

Comment: Professor Boering is a sweet lady. The class is not difficult but the lab reports are tedious. Most people who take this class are second semester seniors, so that gives you a feel for the atmosphere of the class. One class we went to an airport and watched the weatherman deploy a weather balloon at 4pm that would collect data for the 6 o'clock news. Lab reports are oral. There is only one written lab report out of 8 labs. This is a great class to take if you need a class to knockout a requirement but have significant time commitments elsewhere.

Comment: This class is AWESOME!! How many other classes are so hands-on and interesting (if you're interested in atmospheric science anyway)? None. You do spectroscopy, analyze climate model output, and even take a field trip to the Oakland Airport to watch a weather balloon launch! Labs are the only assignment, i.e., no other hw, and they can take some time (4-8 hrs), but again, if you're interested in atmospheric science, it'll be fun. Lastly, you have 30-minute oral exams on all but one of the labs, for which you do a standard written report. 30 mins might sound like a long time, but it goes by really fast. The questions asked are basically given to you, so it's not bad at all. I'd DEFINITELY recommend this class.

Comment: I'm surprised at the low rating for Boering. She was a great instructor for Chem/EPS 182. She gives a 1 hour lecture once per week, going through the scientific background that we need to go through the labs. There are 6 labs during the semester, with each of them having an oral exam (meet up with one of the GSIs one on one and answer questions) instead of a written report or exam. It takes 20-30 minutes and is a much more efficient method. You're allowed to have your lab notebook with you during the exam, so put all relevant information and figures in it. The first lab is brutal, while the other five aren't as bad. Half of the labs have to do with stratospheric ozone chemistry, and the other half with climate. The final is only 20% of the grade, and she gives you the questions beforehand (and even answers them in office hours). Boering was always very enthusiastic in lecture and is very accessible and helpful. I would definitely recommend this course.
