Comment: Poor lecturer. Not fair exams. Reviewing for his exams is like looking through random facts, and it is impossible to tell what materials are important. Assignments have nothing to do with the lectures or the exams. His exams are just random. Totally lost interest in chembio after his classes.

Comment: Cate taught the biochemistry portion of 4B. He knows what he is talking about but has a huge monotone problem. He is a nice guy but his jokes are dry and often no one laughs at them and he wonders why. Exams come 90% from his lectures. I recorded them while doing other homework during the actual lecture and listened to them to study for exams and got an A.

Comment: His lectures were difficult to follow because the material covered were broad, and introduction of the material was abrupt especially during biochemistry and biofuel lectures. His assignments were pain. His exams are not written well and difficult in my opinion. Chem 4B taught me a lot, but it can be better.

Comment: Professor Cate's really nice as a person, and his lectures aren't that boring if you really pay attention. Go to every lecture and really put in the effort to understand what he's saying. He's very nice outside of class as well. During the poster session, he kindly listened to my presentation and I was able to discuss my project with him on a very relaxed level. Much better than Douskey.

Comment: His monotone voice is terrible... but that doesn't take away from the fact that he is a good prof. I believe another review said this earlier and I agree 100%. I never thought I would want to do anything with biology while I studied Chemical Engineering... and now I am considering concentrating in bio tech for my major. This guy can be boring as hell, but if you pay attention, you can get quite a bit out of the course and actually do well on his exams (which are heavily based on HW and lecture). So, if you are a CoC student, you might HAVE to take this guy... just know that it won't be as bad as other Chem 4 professors.

Comment: After Douskey, it was exciting to actually learn stuff during lecture. Though I have almost no interest in chemical biology, Professor Cate taught it very well, although as others have said, he is rather dry and monotonous. Nevertheless, if you put in the effort to not zone out/fall asleep/die of boredom, you will realize that he actually explains things very clearly, and in exactly the same manner as he expects you to remember for the exam. It is a little bizarre learning chemical biology in a general chemistry class, but just go with the flow and you will do fine. On a separate note, do not be lulled into a false sense of security with the poster projects--some groups were graded harshly for a bad poster!

Comment: Prof Cate's lectures are pretty dull. I thought I was interested in chemical biology until I took this course, unfortunately. I learned the course material mostly through the online textbook he instructed us to buy. It can be difficult to identify what is important throughout his lectures because there doesn't seem to be much content overall. Just remember: understanding general trends is more important than memorizing particulars.

Comment: How much I was able to get out of this class depended on how dedicated to my interest in chemistry I was at any given time. I could learn as much or as little as I wanted, essentially, and still pass the class because there was a lot of memorization involved. However, the most helpful thing I did was pay attention to the arguments that would be used later in organic.

Comment: I really enjoyed the material that Professor Cate presented. It was very interesting and he's really nice when answering questions... kinda guides you to the way to think about things, which is fun. Midterms caused a bit of angst because it's kinda tough to tell what he'll ask, since he wants you to understand concepts and apply them to problems you've never seen before.

Comment: Cate was a godsend after Douskey. His lectures seemed much more filled with material. However some of it did seem like he was stuffing it in to fill the lecture space up. If you haven't taken AP bio, this will be an eye-opener. If you have, you might fall asleep. His exams are near-identical to previous years' exams so if you study them you'll do very well.

Comment: Compared to Dr. Douskey, the first lecturer, Cate was amazing. He actually uploaded his annotated slides onto bspace to supplement his lectures. However his main way of teaching was to tell students to "wiki" it. It seemed as though he expected students to learn from the wikis as the topics he taught was not very detailed in our assigned chemistry textbook. Most of his problems are his own, so do not expect to rely on a solutions manual. His exams were fair. This semesters exams were pretty similar to the past years so be sure to study those. Be warned his lecture contains lots of biology stuff and if you did not take AP Biology in high school, you might be lost.

Comment: Prof Cate lectured the second half of the course. Overall, he was pretty chill. Lectured a lot about what other people do concerning chem and chembio applications. Wouldve definitely help if you had AP Bio which I did not. His homework assignments were mostly supplements that covered material from lecture and were much easier compared to 4A or Douskey's material. They were all doable in very short amounts of time. Cate was pretty monotonic during lecture, and seemed kinda bored some times. But you cold tell he enjoyed talking about the things he did in lecture, because he is an expert and got to choose what he wanted to teach. Topics covered by Cate included chemical kinetics, a lot of chemical biology with amino acids, proteins, DNA, enzymes, PCR, and a little section on climate, fossil fuels, biofuels, and carbon emissions. Not really sure how helpful he was because he explained stuff pretty well in lecture, but I didnt go to office hours. His exams were fair, nothing too bad. If you study diligently, you will do well. Oh, and intermolecular forces tend to show up A LOT in this particular chem course, so know you IMF's in and out, because they are a central part in 4B...Good Luck with this class.

Comment: Cate. Hm. Well, the one thing that comes to mind is that lecture material is not really... relevant. Cate shows you how people apply concepts to manufacture proteins, to help the environment, to do all of these things... but he doesn't teach you the concepts themselves. Homework is much shorter than what Douskey assigns; doable in under an hour. You NEED to open the book to pass his side of the class, because lecture isn't going to be enough to get you through.

Comment: Hes pretty good. If you like biology you will very much enjoy his class, he is a joint appointment in both Chem and MCB. His lectures were very dry in the beginning when we were learning kinetics. But now that we got to sections he is passionate about, biological molecules and alternative energy, he has gotten much more involved and the lecture much more interesting. The problems sets are shorter but not necessarily easy, they do take some thinking but he doesn't assign too many book problems because those are dreadful.

Comment: Ugh. I didn't think it was possible for lectures to be that dry. If you have AP Bio background you're set. If not, you're probably still set. Ridiculously easy material, weekly problem sets take half a page of writing, and tests are pretty much exactly like old test/homework problems. Basically no reading (he just refers you to a dozen wikipedia articles per lecture). Cate's half of the class was almost insultingly slow, after they put us through 4A. Oh, and don't expect any demos.

Comment: Jaime Cate is a pretty cool Professor, and teaches, in my opinion, the easiest part of Chem C130. It includes memorization of amino acids/nucleotides, and their structural properties. Much easier than the physical chemistry oriented aspects of the course that come later on. JC enjoys cracking the occasional joke and bringing in outside examples, which I really enjoy. Comment: I really enjoyed professor Cate's portion of this class. It's basically a much more detailed version of the first third of Bio 1A. Things are actually explained from the underlying physical laws rather than just "HERP DERP JUST MEMORIZE IT LOL!". (By the way, don't bother taking Bio 1A as a prereq for this class, you don't need it if you've had AP Bio).
