Comment: Krantz was a decent lecturer. The class wasn't too difficult, but was kind of all over the place. It seemed really stupid that we gave a presentation on polymers given that it was a lab class, but the labs were decent and the lab exam was really fair.

Comment: Even though Krantz is knowledgable, his lectures were super boring and the final lab exam was super difficult that it was ridiculous. Even though the final was extremely difficult, his curve ended up working towards our favor and he curved to approximately a A- average which was super nice of him.

Comment: The main issue I have with Krantz's portion of the class was that there's a lot of material and his lecturing style isn't always clear and to the point. His derivations are kind of hard to follow sometimes, and while you're never expected to regurgitate them on exams, derivations in general help you understand where everything comes from. That said, Krantz is a really mellow and cheerful guy. Homeworks are ok, but they tend to be more simplistic and plug and chug than his actual exam questions. His first midterm was pretty easy, and the second midterm average was like an F+. So yeah.

Comment: The course is horribly-designed and spends a lot of time either overteaching important concepts or addressing unimportant ones. Krantz is a terrible lecturer who clearly didn't want to be there and may or may not have understood anything about what he taught. Lecture did not help with homework or quizzes; homework and quizzes, while easy, did not help significantly with exams. The practice exams also did not help with the exams, as past professors wrote their tests to be fairly straightforward and Krantz wrote his to have you extrapolate new methods of solving problems that you hadn't seen anywhere else. Krantz is a terrible professor, this is a terrible course, and you should see if there is ANY means by which you can avoid taking it.

Comment: Terrible lecturer with literally no redeeming qualities. He isn't even entertaining. Made many mistakes in lecture and fails to answer most questions satisfactorily. He is frequently arrogant and dismissive , and although he occasionally puts in a little extra time outside of class to attempt to clarify confusing points made in lecture, his overall presentation is extremely confusing, unengaging, and demotivational. This class could have been great with a different professor, but I ended up hating it after a month.

Comment: The perfect example of a professor who have no idea what he's talking about. He spent 30 minutes trying to explain what isobaric means (maintaining the same pressure). Then he goes on and speed through partition equations with a mathematical derivation without really telling you what is going on in the system or why this works. He was not helpful in office hour at all. He was 20 minutes late to his own office hour. Then when I asked him to explain what he meant to ask on the problem set, he just repeated the question and told me to think about it. Extremely arrogant. His work is in membrane potential, so he's actually knowledgable in the last stretch with Nernst Potential, but absolutely clueless with thermodynamics (the mid portion of the course). His exam is not THAT bad, but very time-constraint. So be careful and work fast. Enthusiasm, he tries to make the lecture interesting. But his lack of knowledge in the area simply ruins it. In summary, avoid this guy and get Kuriyan.

Comment: Krantz is a very nice guy, but his lectures were disorganized and the exam was much harder than any of the homework assignments or practice problems. His style of lecturing was quite boring and did not inspire students to attend class or pay attention.

Comment: He was clear while lecturing, and I think I would've done better on the test if I didn't keep oversleeping his lectures. He posts up his annotations afterward, and reading through them plus the book helps. In lecture, he talks about what will be on the test, so the test is pretty straightforward.

Comment: To be honest, I'm a little disappointed looking at the reviews below. Krantz is a great professor who clearly knows his stuff. His lectures are direct and concise. I agree that he is a little fast-paced and tends to breeze over some derivations, but that just helps you keep awake during lecture. I agree that he isn't that helpful when you ask questions or go to office hours. He comes off as being a little pompous, which makes him a little unapproachable. But, I think his exams are well-written and his problems are well thought out.

Comment: His exams were tough but fair. His assignments were great. But he was not a very good teacher - he seemed to not care very much about his lectures. At least he was kind enough to post full notes online so that lecture attendance was more or less optional.

Comment: Krantz is pretty difficult. He tries to help in lecture, but a bit of what he says is confusing. A lot of the time he will derive some relationships dealing with thermodynamics, but during the process, won't explain what he's deriving. Suddenly, you get a formula, but Krantz doesn't explain problems which will help you use it. If you're copying the notes from his lectures, he'll scroll down faster than you can write (although you can just ask him to back up a bit), or run out of "digital paper" (don't ask) and switch to a new page. He seems like a nice guy, but I didn't do too well in his class. More about the class than the professor--if you're not going to office hours or the tutor session, it'll be pretty rough. This is because in section, that puny 1 hour per week, you're either getting homework/quizzes/midterms back or taking another quiz. The GSI's all seem to agree that there's more testing than instruction in section. Just be forewarned.

Comment: He is pretty bad. Nice guy, but can't teach. Problem sets are more annoying than anything else. But if you go to GSI OH, they give you the answer. Don't bother with professor OH, he's not helpful at all.

Comment: Brian Krantz is a pretty enthusiastic professor, but he isn't very helpful because during his lectures, as soon as he draws something on his tablet, he scrolls down so the students don't really have time to copy it down. On the plus side, he posts all of his lectures, so anything you don't catch, you can look over again when you get home. His exams are very fair, and somewhat on the easy side. The same can be said for his assignments, and all of the answers can be found straight from the book. He makes you think a little, which is always nice.

Comment: Professor Krantz is knowledgeable and makes the lectures interesting. He is clear about the level of detail he expects on the midterm. The lectures are not paced very well - the first few lectures are super slow, and the last few lectures are packing in lots of material.

Comment: Totally hated the metabolism unit of MCB102. This unit makes you memorize a whole ton of biopathways (enzymes, mechanisms, structure of intermediates, etc). I don't think Krantz himself is terrible, but just the nature of the material he was teaching sucked. Honestly, most of the time, I felt like going to lecture was pointless because I would only really learn it when I sat down and read the textbook. Krantz was not that great with his time management too because at some point, we were 2 lectures behind schedule... However, he does provide really useful readers on bspace that goes really indepth into the material. His exam was hard because literally half the test was free response and he expected really detailed answers.

Comment: He was a little disorganized, but I couldn't blame him because there was a just a lot of material to teach and learn in so little time. It's like bio1al again but crunched into ONE MONTH. It was a lot of memorization! I kid you not. But if you put in the time, then you'll be fine. I loved his cute laugh!

Comment: I liked the material in Krantz's section and his teaching style was ok, but mostly reading from powerpoints slides. Writing in notes on his tablet as we went along helped. If you enjoyed organic chemistry this section has more of that o-chem stuff but you still to do memorization of the different cell cycles in the body. Fair exam and I think he's a good teacher, though his voice can be monotone at times.

Comment: Krantz has very cluttered power points. He also struggled a bit at presenting the information. However, his exam was reasonable but it definitely required brute memorization.

Comment: Worst lecturer out of the three. but that probably was because his section, metabolism required the most memorization and had the most information. I think he did his best, given what he had to teach. But his lectures were a bit disorganized; they were jam packed with too much information. Sit in the front, because the print on the slides is just too small for you to see from the pack.
