CIV ENG 93 (Fall 2013)

Comment: He's very unapproachable in office hours. His lectures aren't too useful because his powerpoint slides have everything you need to know. The required textbook isn't even needed for the class. Homework is tough, but help with the exams if you understand them. Labs can be tedious but really help as well.

Comment: Lectures can be boring and dull since he just reads off the powerpoint slides. Not very friendly/approachable in office hours

Comment: If you've taken a stats class before, like in high school, this class won't be too bad, although it can be easy to fall asleep haha. Just watch out on exams; the grading can be all or nothing on some questions: one simple misunderstanding could drop you 20 points just like that (as you can tell, this happened to me on both midterms).

Comment: ADK is very knowledgeable in statistics and risk analysis. However this doesn't make statistics interesting. His tests are all based on lecture slides which is helpful because it's pretty hard to focus in class. Labs and homework are quite a lot of work but very helpful in helping students understand the material and prepare for exams. Tests are not very easy but pretty fair. Overall a very effective professor.

Comment: der Kiureghian is a decent professor. As he said, statistics is a dry subject. But nevertheless, it is very essential to engineers and other professions. The homework assignments were difficult. I spent quite a while doing the homework and went to the GSIs' office hours almost every Thursday. Lab assignments were a bit dull, but they really help you do the homework. Exams had problems that were a bit easier than the homework problems, so if you know how to do the homework and practice exams, then you'll be fine. I barely touched the textbook for this class. His slides were good enough.

Comment: AdK is a very respectable and dedicated professor. He broke his hip early in the semester and still took the time to lecture via skype while he was recovering. He responded on bspace forums to make up for his office hours. Unfortunately, his style of presentation is somewhat lackluster. He usually reads off his powerpoint slides (which are very detailed and should be copied onto cheat sheets), without much interaction with students. His voice is somewhat quiet and monotone, which makes it difficult to pay attention (although this isn't his fault). As for the course, there's a lab and homework assignment every week. Some are quite challenging, but they're graded fairly and the labs usually don't take the entire 2 hours. Exams are very fair, and the questions are similar to those on previous exams of his. It may be difficult to stay awake in AdK's lectures, but you'll take away a lot from the course.

Comment: The Powerpoints were thorough. That was just about the only good thing about the class. Oh, also there was one very good GSI who did almost all of the teaching. He wasn't blatantly unhelpful, but he was very lackluster in his presentation. He was willing to listen when a problem arose, and for this I thank him.

Comment: I was not a very big fan of this class at all. The assignments take forever, the labs are super stressful and his lectures are beyond boring. Hopefully there is a good GSI, because that was the only way I learned anything at all.

Comment: der Kiureghian's lectures were boring and really hard to stay awake in. His lecture slides are well organized though and you should copy them onto your cheat sheets. Labs and homework were really dry but they'll teach you what you need to know for the tests. Make sure you understand the formulas and what they do! Apart from one homework assignment which was taken from the textbook, I didn't look at the book all semester.

Comment: Der Kiureghian knows statistics. His tests are extremely fair, usually modeled after the homeworks or lecture slides. Enough cheat sheets so that you don't have to memorize any formulas, but you still should know how to use them before the exams. Lectures were kind of dry, but hey statistics is a dry subject to begin with. I thought the lab exercises were okay, definitely helped me understand the homework better. A few lab exercises related to real world examples (earthquakes, etc.) which was nice to help bridge the theoretical and practical worlds together. I would recommend Kiureghian as a professor for CE 93 if you are a student that keeps up weekly with the material that is presented during lecture, lab, and homework. I think the reason for his low rating on Ninja Courses is because students fell behind and haven't tried throughout the semester waiting for someone to pick them up. It's hard to statistics all at once, it must be taken in small doses and continuously applied and practiced in order for you to master the material. Thanks Der Kiureghian for the great semester. The GSI's were the best I've ever had. Really helpful and all new the material very well.

Comment: dK is the man for stats. Unfortunately, he makes this course incredibly boring. Labs are awful. The only thing good about the lab is that once you slave away for 2 hours computing the driest MATLAB problems ever conceived you can complete the equally dry weekly homework set with ease. Lectures are full powerpoint and literally the bible to memorize/write on your cheat sheets for exams. I would recommend taking this course with a different prof if you can.

Comment: If you liked CE 93, you'll definitely like CEE 193. Additional topics such as decision trees, Bayesian parameter estimation, and Markoff chains are taught here. The first half of the course is just CE 93 material (but with harder homework problems) and the second half is brand new material. Difficult problem sets. Fair exams (based on what he taught in lecture). There's a pdf of his reader for the course on bspace that directly coincides with the material taught in class. Great professor. He knows so much about statistics. Almost all of his examples were based on topics in civil engineering. I thought that his lecture examples were the best part of the course because they demonstrate how useful risk analysis is in civil engineering. I highly recommend this course. If you're taking this course as an undergrad, expect to see a lot of graduate students in your class.
