Comment: Lang is by far the worst teacher I have had at Cal. He has good intentions but his teaching skills are absolutely horrid. His lectures are incredibly boring and I remember hearing students make jokes about jumping out the window to ease their boredom. Lang is also very awkward and it is clear that he does not know how to interact with students. During class he would sporadically leave for 10 minutes at a time to do god knows what. DO NOT GIVE HIM EYE CONTACT. Or at least look away as soon as he gives you the slightest glance or be prepared for the staring contest of your life. He desperately clings onto people who give him attention since most people can barely stay awake in class. The essays you turn in will depend on how much you agree with him which may be a good thing or bad thing. I know many students who wrote essays a few hours before class and got A’s because they followed the general format of one his sample essays. But do not be fooled -this class is not easy and many people fail for stupid reasons. The people who do well in this class tend to be people who were already good writers in the first place. Lang is also not very clear on his feedback and can come off as condescending when he is asked to be clearer. I felt he had a general biased against student athletes and people who disagreed with him intellectually. Lang aims to be highly critical to encourage thinking but he ends up coming off as pretentious. TLDR; DON’T TAKE THIS CLASS

Comment: He is a very intelligent guy. He gives you some reading for the assignments, it is workable. On the essay, If you have trouble finishing up your essay, he might give you guys extra days to finish it too. He is very helpful and personally I enjoyed his reading materials.

Comment: I picked "Monsters and Modernity" because it sounded interesting, and let me tell you that i was NOT disappointed. Reading old favorites like Dracula and Dr Jekyll & Hyde again with Prof Lang was an extremely valuable experience. His ideas may sound far-fetched, but he is able to prove his points and then you see things in a completely new light! I particularly enjoyed the research part of the class, as it allowed to me learn the proper way of doing college-level research that is then turned into a paper. He does assign a lot of reading, but it is always interesting and if you go to office hours, he will lead you in the right direction. Fun class, but not very easy.

Comment: I picked this section blindly entirely to fit my schedule, and I must say it turned out very well. "Monsters and Modernity" is a wholly interesting topic that I thoroughly enjoyed discovering under Lang's instruction. I certainly feel like I've walked away from this class knowing much more than I did before about research, analysis, and the writing process. No exams, per se, and few simple assignments, just two close reading papers and a research project. The papers are quite straightforward, as Lang will pretty much tell you exactly what to write if you bring your draft in to office hours. The research portfolio, however, may be a dealbreaker, as it requires a great deal of time and effort researching and writing about an unfamiliar topic. In the end, this class was probably the greatest workload my first semester, but I definitely feel like I've got something out of it.
