Comment: Class is very demanding. Tons of essays and papers. She expects a lot of her students, but she will make you into a real writer. She isn't afraid to voice out her opinions on a specific concept. Highly recommend going to office hours and getting a writing tutor for the semester, it will be worth it.

Comment: She's really unorganized. Almost ALL of her students would come to class without knowing what was homework and such. Very confusing :(

Comment: College Writing R1a was the most difficult class I have taken at Cal, most likely because it was also a transition course from high school. That being said, Chaing is a great professor that really cares about developing your writing skills and helping you pass that annoying final portfolio. She will put you to do a lot of writing, revision, and peer editing, but in the end, she truly makes you feel prepared to take on any class at Cal.

Comment: Very strict personality. Makes class very stressful. She's very helpful, but you have to ask questions. She doesn't really teach writing, but corrects you.

Comment: This class is very time consuming and all about work. I put in over 60 hours to my essays in this class. Hardest A- I've ever worked for, and I got straight A's in high school. Chiang is fair but hard. She can smell BS from a mile away.

Comment: A great professor in so many ways. Chiang is very passionate and excited about the material, explains it very well, is a very fair and realistic grader (you don't need a perfect essay to get an A), is incredibly helpful and available during office hours, and will make you a much better writer. The only downside to the class is how demanding it is. There are three essays total, the first and third being 6-8 pages long double spaced, and the second being the research paper (which came out to 14 pages single spaced for me). In addition, there are six 150-200 page books that were gone over; while you can skip them or read them later, reading them on time is the best option. The class as a whole is structured very well, with all the readings leading to the third "synthesis" essay. I liked that we began the research paper early in the semester, that way we had plenty of time to mull over all the parts of writing it. Nothing is final until the end of the semester, because your grade is based on the portfolio you turn in with your three essays. This give you a lot of leeway for editing, asking her for help, and catching up. Every essay is due prior to the final portfolio but only for a "reality check" grade, where she tells you what grade you would have gotten and tells you how to improve. On top of the essays, there are various shorter reflection, commentary, and reading response assignments; I think 6 total, each roughly 2 pages long. I would definitely recommend the class, but only if you are wiling to commit the time.
