Comment: Course material regarding food was very interesting and possibly life changing. On the actual assignments however, if you're not good at writing 3 - 5 page papers, you will spend HOURS on your drafts. I highly recommend to consult the professor when this happens, as he will defintely help you flesh out your ideas.

Comment: Larkin is simply a nice guy that is willing to help you all the time. He graded pretty hard on the main essays, and there were a lot of small little assignments that could get annoying, but overall a good class to be a part of.

Comment: Larkin is AMAZING. There are only three essays for the whole class (not including the simple 2-page responses that are sometimes homework paired with reading...he's very understanding and will accept 2 pages of stream-of-consciousness style for these) and he gives TONS of hand-written feedback to make sure your rough draft turns into a grade A paper for the final draft. He's very fond of handouts, which are helpful (if you have a convenient way to organize them) and he's also just a very easy-going, approachable guy. Highly recommend this class if he's teaching it.

Comment: Larkin is extremeley understanding. I came into the class in the Spring, and had a horrible R2A course (DO NOT TAKE AAS R2A with LEONG!!!). I did not attend a couple classes because of work load in other classes and my job, but Larkin personally emailed me letting me know that the handouts he distributed are in the CW dept in Wheeler and if everything was okay. He is super approachable like everyone says and comments on your writing in such detail and in the most constructive, sensitive way. His work load however is pretty good, but on top of your other courses it can get hectic. But every assignment he gives scaffolds towards the end product/essay. This semester's theme was technology taking over humanity and he gave us the option to make a technological representation of our research reflection instead of writing a 3-5 pages reflection. He allocates time for discussion and lecture very skillfully and smoothly --> very good at facilitating. He also uses Piazza to encourage students to talk with each other and posts articles and movie clips about the books we read or the course in general. He is amusing as well, making funny jokes here and there. Larkin also gave us girl scout cookies he bought from his daughter!! HE IS THE MAAANN!!! :D

Comment: Really enthusiastic professor. The class is really useful, as learning how to conduct proper research is relevant in any career. The assignments were often quite long and tedious, but not impossible.

Comment: One of the best professors I've had here. He really wants you to improve and his comments on papers are extremely helpful. I used to bother him during office hours all the time, and he would help me very patiently, and I definitely became better at laying out arguments. He organizes his course very carefully, all you have to do is follow the deadlines. The course is challenging, but its fun (that's how every course should be.)

Comment: Larkin is a really great instructor who really wants you to write better. I found this class to be very interesting (internet and social media), although it was pretty tough. Being not a terribly great writer myself, I struggled with the first two papers, but worked very hard to do well on the final paper. Larkin himself was a great person and very helpful.

Comment: Very highly recommended! Didn't know it was "Writing on War" when I first enrolled, but it turned out to be an enlightening and very interesting course. He's a very friendly, enthusiastic, humorous, and intelligent teacher. Go to office hours if you ever need help. He's very willing to help and gives helpful comments, both on your essays (only 3 main essays and 3 books assigned in total for this class) and during office hour discussions. Overall, I really enjoyed this course, felt like I've improved my writing and research skills significantly, and am also far more educated about what's going on with the Iraq War, politics, economy, the truth of a US soldier's experience, Iraq's situation, etc. If you need a course to fulfill your R&C part B requirement, take this one! But if you do take it, please try to really engage in the course, especially the discussions. Professor Larkin certainly has a lot to offer and plenty to teach, but you also have to be willing to learn. You'll definitely also gain a lot more out of this course if you find a personal interest in it--and by a lot more, I mean knowledge beyond just writing or researching skills, like understanding the truth behind the Iraq War, soldiers' experience, and other cultures. You'll learn to really think critically, rethink what common assumptions, to evaluate everyday news or claims for reliability, and much more. Great course! The assignments were well integrated, and I found the large majority of them to be helpful, engaging, and worthwhile. And don't worry, you can get an "A" in this class if you really put in the effort. Comment: For a writing class, the deadlines are pretty well cushioned and the reading is more or less interesting. I didn't realize the section was all about war but it's been ok so far, and Larkin is very available in office hours - talking to him is definitely a good idea.

Comment: Larkin was not very enthusiatic for college writing 130. I went to office hours but be was not very helpful at all. papers were brutal, and grading feedback was minimal. If you want to improve your creative writing skills, I would not recommend this class.
