Comment: Juan is arrogant and condescending, but to do well in his class the best thing to do is go to his office hours and participate in discussion. He is a harsh critic, and often times I did not know what he really wanted me to fix in my drafts however he really encourages peer editing in and out of class. If I could do R1B again, he still wouldn't be my top choice, but I learned a lot about the college writing process (which is what you're supposed to get out of it).

Comment: Juan is really nice and enthusiast in e-mails and in person. I was absent during a whole week of discussion because of the flu and Juan was very understanding of it and did not mark me down for skipping the classes when I explained my situation to him via e-mail. Juan has also made me realize major flaws in my analytical writing skills at a college level (possibly higher, with the expectations he holds for his students), however, his written comments on papers do not do a particularly good job at addressing what or how to change my paper to be more concise and analytical. In fact, it's a bit frustrating to try and figure out what exactly he is looking for in a paper at times, other than the fact that he is really nitpicky about terminology. However, Juan does have another redeeming side; he is always enthusiastic and holds "virtual office hours" via IMs and I have come into his physical office hours once and he sat down and tried to prompt me in the right direction for how my paper should go, despite the fact that I had no idea where to begin to fix it. Overall, the class was interesting and very different from the more European and Western-based literature courses I have taken in the past.

Comment: He gives you way to many terms that you never understand and or will ever use elsewhere. Pretty harsh grader and is hard to be helped out
