Comment: I was skeptical at first about the topic, "On the Waterfront," but Tom approached the material with such enthusiasm and great analysis that over the course of the semester, the central idea of the class came through. He was very willing to help with writing, even requiring we go to office hours to look over essays. The workload was not too bad. Readings were reasonable though still significant at times, and we had only 3 essays: a 3pg diagnostic, a 5pg midterm, and a 10pg final. However, the midterm project took a lot longer than my group expected. Definitely start early to begin brainstorming ideas and leaving time for any videos, photographs, or visits you need to make/do. He was a fair, albiet tough grader. It's difficult to get an A on an essay because he expects high-level work for that grade. He clearly explained his expectations, and helped us correct errors in our writing.
