Comment: Best professor I have had at Cal. They are both very humble, approachable, and passionate. Shaiken is a great speaker. We also have guest lecturers. There are too many reading assignment to keep up with but you are only tested on what is discussed in lecture. No homework assignments, just two in-class midterms and a final that consist of essay questions. I studied the night before for both and ended up with a B (took the class P/NP).

Comment: This class is a MUST-TAKE at Berkeley. I learned sooo much from the readings, movies, and lectures. That said, I ended up with a B because even though the material is very interesting, it's a LOT of information, and you really need the critical thinking skills that link events together in split seconds. Honestly, I don't regret taking this course. The lectures were so full of emotions I felt like I was in a movie. We had guest speakers that related their personal stories too. The course really helped me grow. I loved it!

Comment: The material for this class is very interesting and completely relevant for our time in terms of immigration and current events. Lecture is an hour and a half and sometimes gets a bit boring. The course gets much more interesting as it progresses. Shaiken is extremely knowledgeable and brings in friends (aka world leaders) from across the world for lectures. Readings can be a bit dull some are incredibly fascinating and eye opening. The reader came from Copy Central on Bancroft, the other books can be found on their websitehttp://southernborder.berkeley.edu/. Discussions are not mandatory, there are review sessions before each of the three exams that make up your final grade. They are very helpful attend these sessions! Exams are fairly easy as long as you attend lecture and skim through the reading.

Comment: This course is extremely engaging and easy to do well in with a little bit of effort. The midterms count for 20%/40%, with your higher score on the two midterms counting for 40%. The final exam is 40% of your grade, so there are no extra assignments or participation grades. If you attend class, you should have no problem keeping up and succeeding in this course.

Comment: It's a lot of reading, but it's interesting. The exams aren't too hard. If you really want to know more about US-Mexico border relations, then this is the class you want to take

Comment: Prof. Shaiken is one of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable professors that I have ever had, and he is a veteran in his field. The assignments - one or two, at most - are simple and graded leniently, but the tests are fairly difficult, with little to no curve.

Comment: The topics were interesting; the exams focused more on memorizing historical events than concepts. The lectures were pretty interesting, though the way Shaiken lectured and seemed to emphasize every single word bugged me a bit.

Comment: I really enjoyed this class. Readings were interesting. Professor Shaiken's lectures are very well organized; he always makes sure to point out what he feels are the most important takeaways from the lecture, which is very helpful when studying for exams. Exams are very fair.

Comment: Very knowledgable. His background is more in labor issues - he has oft been quoted by the New York Times in articles about Detroit, so he brings more of the American perspective to what's discussed (it is an AC class, after all). Well worth taking; both profs have amazing experiences to make this class come alive.
