Comment: Papadopoulos is by far my favorite professor in engineering (also had him for E7). It was pretty unusual to have this course offered and have him teach (he last taught it in 2003). He is THE MAN for anything finite element so if he is teaching and you are interested at all take this class with him! This is a very niche field and Papadopoulos is at the forefront so the course was super interesting. He writes all of the assignments, which are a combo of analytics, MATLAB, and COMSOL. The single midterm was open book open note and very fair. Overall a great course to wrap your mind around.

Comment: I took this class with Papadopoulos and Packard. Papadopoulos made a little more sense than Packard for me, as he went through things slower. The first midterm was not bad, but the second was horrible and screwed some people over. The midterms were done on paper, so if you messed up a coding you got the whole question wrong. The labs (weekly assignments) took way too long. It was a really helpful course, in that I've used Matlab and the skills I acquired with later classes, but it took a toll on my GPA.

Comment: I took this class with both Papadopoulos and Packard -- I will say, I preferred Packard. In comparison, Papadop was less enthusiastic and less helpful. He covered very basic material at a slow pace, but then the homeworks and exams expected a much deeper understanding of the same topics. He could have held more OH's. He seemed likeable, but I wish he had put more into this class. That said, he wasn't an unfair grader in the end.

Comment: The labs for this class took way too long. A lot of the work was pointless because we had to write our functions and test them against functions that are already programmed into Matlab. Matlab is a great tool, but this class went into way too much detail.

Comment: I took E7 when Packard and Papadopoulos taught it together in Fall 2011 and it was an extremely challenging class. Problem sets routinely took between 20-30 hours to complete. The first exam was easy, the second ruined lives (people cried...seriously) and the final was somewhere inbetween but closer to the second.

Comment: Extremely helpful as a lecturer and teacher - definitely gave me a solid understanding of MATLAB in Fall 2011. Exams were extremely difficult - especially the second midterm. However, E7 is a highly variable class based on who's teaching it, so don't take any one rating to heart!

Comment: AMAZING professor. Very tough tho. E 7 (with Packard) was no easy course. Lots of hard HW assignments that kept us on the computer day and night, but I would say he is one hell of a professor. if you wanna LEARN MATLAB (you should cause you will use it over and over again) AVOID civil engineering professors and take ME professors (specifically him and Packard) (because everyother semester mech eng dept takes over E7 and other times CE dept takes over). exams are BRUTAL. but its brutal to everyone. one of our avgs was around 30 something percent. but the curve will definitely bring you up to a great standing if you have done alright. one of my favorite professors, uses tough love to make you learn the course and extremely enthusiastic about the assignemnts and class overall. Defnitely recommended,

Comment: Not as helpful as packard in office hours, but still a great guy and good professor. I don't know if it was his or packard's fault for the insane assignments (25-40 hours a week) and super hard tests. I would take him in a heartbeat for a class that didn't have labs or weekly assignments.

Comment: E7 is a weeder course. It starts out decisively easy, but by the 6th week or so the lab assignments begin to get really long and difficult. Expect weekly assignments of ~16 pages. It's a good idea to start labs during the weekend to get a head start and hog the GSIs during the lab sessions, because they are invaluable. Exams are fairly straightforward; he posts old exams on bSpace, and while it may not cover the same material, it gives you a good idea of the difficulty of the questions that you can expect.

Comment: E7 was tough. It starts of deceivingly easy with adding matrices and such and then there was a huge gap to writing your own programs (Mastermind game). Packard's personality is such that he gets super excited during lectures and doesnt realize he is confusing half of the students by breezing through his slides. His slides are quite concise, but its tough to go back to them during the labs and studying for midterms because theres no one to explain the details again. His labs were fairly consistent in terms of difficulty with those written by Papadopolous. Papadopolous went slower in lecture so you were able to take in material in lecture instead of staring at the screen with a blank expression wondering wtf was going on. The first midterm was easy stuff and then everyone got owned on the second because Packard and Papa. admitted to overestimating our abilities. Some of the material was a bit tough to grasp at first, but you really had to practice MATLAB syntax fool around with functions and different commands to get good at programming. I personally found recursion to be the toughest concept. The regression and interpolation lectures/labs were just a blur of many equations. Everything begins to build on the concepts and foundations set during the first month of the course so don't fall behind. Practice makes perfect, and in this class, you HAVE TO practice MATLAB. It's not good enough to just do the labs and look at lecture slides, you really have to play around with everything to get a firm grasp of how programming works in terms of engineering. Good Luck with E7!!!

Comment: Papadopoulos was great with the initial assignments, he broke everything down and made sure that the lectures explained everything. as the course progressed he expected the students to take concepts and methods they had learned and apply them in a variety of ways. I took math 53 while taking this course. if you take or have taken 54 while taking this course, it will make it 10x easier.

Comment: All the things you learn in E7 with Papadopoulos and Frenklach come from the assignments, GSIs, and the lecture notes. I never went to lecture cause I'd always fall asleep anyways. Labs could be a little tough, but the GSIs are great resources. As for the exams, they were a little tough, but they had cheat sheets and just as long as you actually did the labs, you'd be fine.

Comment: Papadopoulos is definitely a fair professor. The lab assignments could be difficult at times, but usually in those instances the GSI's would be really helpful during lab section. The lectures were clear so you already knew everything you needed to know going into the lab assignments. The lab assignments were very helpful in applying and retaining the material, and the exams were very fair. If you were comfortable with the homework you would do well. Also, Papadopoulos is one of the professors that will always be happy to answer your questions.
