Comment: Some teachers have a certain vibe around them- the type that makes you not want to let them down, to constantly do your best. This guy has that vibe. He's very lenient, yet doesn't grade as if all he cares about is grades- he genuinely cares about the students' learning. To him, grades seem to be secondary. Also, he's incredibly smart; you could say your thoughts, and he'll understand your point almost 100% of the time; which is actually kind of rare.

Comment: He is the best professor I have had at Berkeley. You can tell that he honestly cares about his students and he is extremely helpful. My writing improved more in one semester of his class than in years of previous english courses. I use to greatly dislike writing essays but Professor Jordan changed my view of writing and now I find writing essays not only much easier but also much more enjoyable. If you can take a class with him definitely do it, you will definitely not regret it.

Comment: I would say that this professor was okay. Just to let you know, we have an essay due every week and our first essay involved writing about two lines (which I was not very excited about and spent forever to write on)

Comment: Joseph Jordan is a great English instructor and an all around awesome guy. Ironically, he is an English instructor with a stutter, but his speech impediment doesn't affect his confidence at all. While some class periods can be slightly slow, he has a good sense of humor and often has interesting and comical stories that are tangentially related (if not at all) that prove to be thought provoking. Joseph is generally an easy and lenient grader and stresses repeatedly to us that he wants us to improve as writers and critical thinkers rather than focus on trivial details. Although his tone of voice may not always reflect it, he is extremely enthusiastic about his field. Joseph is an extremely likeable and understanding instructor and I urge anyone who takes an English class to have him as an instructor if you can.

Comment: Seriously my favorite professor so far at Berkeley. I absolutely hated his class the first few weeks. I thought he was incredibly boring, and honestly I couldn't get over his stutter (as bad as that sounds), but I am so glad I stuck with it! He is an incredibly genuine and caring professor who will talk with you forever in office hours and gives great feedback on work. He treats lectures as discussions, so don't be afraid to speak up (especially if you don't have a section for the class). I also gained a really new perspective on Shakespeare - I highly recommend taking one of the 117 classes with him if he teaches them again. He focuses completely on language rather than themes, which can be frustrating at times but makes his students into awesome close readers.
