ENV DES 1 (Fall 2014)

Comment: The combination of this class and the professor was terrible. The class in general is known as the worst architecture classes you'll have to take. The projects are very time consuming and relatively pointless while you are taking the class. However, it does teach you how to spend hours at a time on a project, which you will have to do a lot in the future (junior and senior year). She spent every lecture talking about things that didn't really relate to the class what so ever. Half the lectures were about her career and then all the GSIs careers. He was never available outside of class but the GSIs are available quite often. The exams require that you do all the reading (the is an unmanageable amount of reading). My advice, work hard and struggle through it.

Comment: Prof Jewell did not make herself available in and out of class. She instructed the class to go to our assigned GSIs first and if needed we may go see the head GSI before coming to her. This made her unapproachable in all aspects. She is very knowledgeable in her field, but she lacked the enthusiasm to keep the class awake. Keep in mind that attendance is taken at the beginning of lecture, so try not to miss out on too many as dry as it may be. As you may have heard, this course is notorious for its tedious assignments. The weekly assignments are introduced in section and are due the following Monday at noon. If you want to succeed in this class, then you must commit a lot of time and effort. And yes that also means giving up much of your weekends. There were 7 assignments in total that were 10 points each. Make sure you score high because it makes up 35% of your final grade. These assignments led up to a hefty final project. We were required to envision Berkeley in 2114 and carve our proposed plan from a book. My friends and I ended up throwing a book carving party to keep each other motivated. It is very important to not feel discouraged in this class because rarely will they ever give out perfect scores. That is okay because there is always room for improvement. You’re never really done with what you turn in. It is also important to note that precision and good craftsmanship will get you very far. There was one midterm and one take-home final. Both exams were fair and straightforward since it was solely based on the weekly readings. The same can be said for the two essays we had. Although I would not recommend this class to those outside of CED, I would like to add that it’s not as bad as how I, and everyone else, make it seem. I definitely have a love-hate relationship with this class because while it was tiresome, it allowed for a creative outlet. It also gave me a glimpse of what it will be to purse a designing major.

Comment: Hell of a lot of work for a 3 unit course. Projects were repetitive and tedious. It's just one of those classes the CED people have to get through. Don't worry, it will be over soon!

Comment: Lectures, on some occasions were actually very interesting, but for the most part were quite boring. Most time is put into sketchbook projects. For those (like myself) who aren't very crafty, this class is very difficult. If you don't go to office hours, expect little help from the professor on assignments. Midterm and final was from reading and pretty easy.

Comment: She's a great person, but sometimes the presentations of her lectures tend to be on the boring side. Other times, she gives interesting insight on some of the works of famous architects, landscape architects, urbanists, designers, etc. The reader you have to get is a fat book and it costs about $60 from Copy Center... The exams (1 midterm, 1 Final) are based on all the readings, so they are fair, but despite that, they are very subjective because you have to show your own insight as well. Work well on your sketchbook assignments! Those are worth more of your grade in the class (40%).

Comment: Her assignments are rather badly written, and often dilute their usefulness in specific requirements. The book project was interesting, but the emphasis of grades and review are on boldness of visual presentation, while the actual class doenst really touch on that. Her lectures were dry, and the final after the final project was a little convoluted.

Comment: Honestly, this course was way too much work for a 3 unit course, Professor Jewell seemed incompetent at teaching the course material, and lectures were boring and irrelevant to the assignments. The assignments themselves were somewhat fun, but awfully time consuming. I don't recommend taking this course unless you're in CED.

Comment: Very disappointed in the class. Some of the material was interesting, but the professor was not. Class took up way too much time fora 3 unit class, but I guess that's what ED is about.

Comment: She was barely in class. Mostly other lecturers came into to present on various topics, but when Jewell was there, she was not approachable!

Comment: Jewell was...rather boring actually, though she's nice and gives good project reviews. Some of the guest lectures were cool, but others were very dull. Projects mainly consisted of writing essays and drawing plans & sections, not too time-consuming, but again not very interesting either. Midterm was easy. The other ED1 professor, De Monchaux, was a guest lecture once and he sounded more exciting.
