Comment: Took this for AC and history breadth - material is interesting and very Berkeley. Go women. Go minorities which is all good and fun, but just be prepared for very enthusiastic classmates. Her exams are tough tough BUT she offers major extra credit. If you do well on the extra credit assignments (2) then you can get up to 10% added to your FINAL grade. I put in "okay" effort and the extra credit moved me from an 83% to a 93%. So I would recommend this class (make sure it's Rodriguez, Idk if any other profs offer ec)

Comment: Spent too much time on slavery era (at least a third of the class), then about Latino oppression in the second third, and then, FINALLY, LGBT issues, but more specifically transgenders in US prison systems... Very unfocused, almost never talked about WOMEN or GENDER (This IS under the GWS department right??). Professor Rodriguez often had many smart and interesting things to say, but she would always let the students instead of her... MANY long law reviews.. I was initially excited for this class, but later I found myself unmotivated. The aforementioned topics were interesting (perhaps not the slavery part), but unfocused and not what I expected out of a GWS class.

Comment: Her annotated bibliography assignment is possibly the dumbest thing possible. Class material is extremely boring and is more of a history class. Very deceptive

Comment: Class was extremely boring, I made a mistake in taking this. It was basically a summary of Berkeley's view on sex, race, gender, etc. Nothing new, and it was basically a circlejerk for feminists and apologetic men; there was almost no significant conflict of opinions. If that is your thing then please go ahead and take the class.

Comment: Rodriguez is a enthusiastic, colorful lecturer with a lot to say; she is very knowledgeable about her subject, although she does make factual errors about some other things. (Also, get used to her excessive air quoting.) The assignments consisted of reading responses every two weeks and an annotated bibliography, which weren't too big of a deal. Good class, exposed me to a lot of interesting topics, and I would definitely recommend this for your AC if you have any interest in the subject. (Note: the professor's name for the course was "Gender, Race, Justice, and Resistance" as opposed to the vague name in the catalog. It seemed like a lot of people, including me, were surprised or even put off that the class isn't quite Feminism 101. I would say a little more than half of the class was centered mainly around race issues.)

Comment: This course taught by Rodriguez is defines what I think Berkeley stands for. It's a pretty easy class to keep up with. There are 6 responses and 1 annotated bibliography with a midterm and final. She is a great lecturer and really cares about the issues that she teaches about. If you need an AC course, this one is a great one to take.

Comment: Definitely an easy class. Homework is really light and the exams aren't too bad either. I took this AC p/np, so it was really relaxed for me. Expect there to be an 8:1 ratio of women to men in this class.

Comment: I learnt a lot and this course provided me with a completely new view on many issues around. I recommend it for your AC + history breadth. She is very enthusiastic and it should be easy to get an A if you're interested in these issues.

Comment: Professor Rodriguez is a great lecturer, and the course covered very interesting (but also very depressing) material. Topics included: slavery and slave laws, US and Iroquois constitutions, gay marriage, transgenders in the prison system, immigration, laws on farm workers, the Ugly Laws. We had to write reading responses that were only about a page long, and instead of a research paper, we wrote an annotated bibliography (focus on research and commenting on research instead of writing a full paper). No midterm, just a final.

Comment: The lectures are pretty interesting, but the students are too opinionated.

Comment: It's totally awesome. Group projects are fun and simple and like nothing else you will ever do in school. We read erotic graphic novels, watched and analyzed pornography as art, and had very interesting guest lectures from the artists themselves. I recommend!
