Comment: Professor Jacobsen is a very enthusiastic, humorous lecturer who provides interesting demos to explain some of the concepts he teaches. His homework is easy (yes it's hard to get a perfect score on the writing assignments but he adjusts to the average so it's ok), and the exams are manageable as long as you read the book and take practice quizzes. I didn't really like my GSI, thought he could have handled things better, but the professor himself was easy to talk (although he makes you think) and helpful when I went to his office hours. Only downside was that it was 1.5 hr lecture and I had an 8am class right before it so I usually fell asleep BUT NOT BECAUSE IT WAS BORING... although some lectures were. Overall, very passionate and approachable professor and an interesting, relatively easy class to be in.

Comment: This was a very good class, taught by an excellent professor. He really seems to enjoy what he is teaching (especially in the last few lectures), and the demonstrations are always fun to watch. The subject matter is straightforward, easy to grasp if you are science inclined, and for the most part interesting (who doesn't love tachyons?). Anyways, ended up with an A+, and had genuine fun while doing it.

Comment: Took this class so I could have some exposure before taking the prereq physics class, and the course content was completely useless. None of it seemed remotely relevant to the coursework in calc based physics classes. Hard to judge Jacobsen, as he was fairly enthusiastic, but his lectures were on material that seemed to be geared more towards interest or amusement rather than education.

Comment: Jacobsen is a pretty good lecturer, but you really don't need to know the details of his lectures to get an A in the class. Sometimes Muller would actually come in and give guest lectures. I really liked Joel as a GSI. He is very nice, and is always prepared for section.

Comment: Oh my god....lectures were so boring!!! nothing on the exams were based on lecture and they were so pointless. I wouldn't have gone, but he gave out frequent quizzes in the lectures..

Comment: Funny guy, very knowledgeable. Asks for feedback from the class about the best way to structure the class (more demos, etc.). Lectures can be hell, but only because the class is early (if he does anything with the lights off, half of the class falls asleep) and physics, even without numbers, can be hard to grasp in such a short time.

PHYSICS 8A (Fall 2008)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm

Comment: What can I say - mastering physics blows. But Jacobsen is a nice guy at office hours and he likes to think of physics in a way that is conceptually. His tests are less mathematical which works for me. I ended up doing a lot better than I thought. A good GSI can make a difference for this class.

Comment: I love Bob! He is really passionate about his students and what he teaches. The class is about basic physics concepts applied to current events and it covers a LOT of material that isn't hard, its just all memorization. The exams consist of a mix between multiple choice and short answer - the short answer questions can be difficult to explain, and the graders were picky on the accuracy of each question. Aside from the exams, I found this class to be really interesting and I learned a lot about physics in the world from it. I would recommend it because it fulfills the physical science breadth, but be prepared to read/memorize a lot of information.

Comment: Jacobsen is a pretty solid teacher. He explains the material well and uses demonstrations to prove his point. The downsides to this class are the article summaries and the short answers on the exams. Do not expect to get higher than a 70% on the article summary portion of the class because of the horrible grading system. Also, the short answers on the exams are graded ridiculously hard. Even if you answer the question right but do not provide every single detail, you get docked lots of points.

Comment: Very interesting class. Lecture can seem to drag on especially when there are no demos since it is almost a carbon copy of what is written in the text book. Jacobsen is knowledgeable and can answer all your questions. Grading is on a curve so its going to be a little bit of a challenge especially if you have a lot of over achievers and/or physics majors in the class.

Comment: i hated this class. partially because of the random pop quizzes that made attendance mandatory when lecture basically consisted of (sometimes interesting) demonstrations of concepts but mostly just regurgitation of what was in the textbook. the textbook is pretty well written, and the exams are pretty fair given that the class amounts to a lot of memorization of sporadic facts. i suppose some people might find the material interesting but i thought it was pretty boring. i wouldn't recommend it but a lot of people love this class. if you are interested in physics though, this isn't a very good introduction to what physics classes are actually like in college.

Comment: Interesting class (it may feel a little dumbed down if you are a science person, but it can be fun nonetheless). The professor is very charismatic, and the tests are fair and pretty easy if you've read the chapters/done the practice tests. Overall, a pretty good class; ended up with an A+ (hell yeah). And, as someone mentioned below, the teacher is basically like a real-life version of Peter Griffin.

Comment: Jacobsen is a great lecturer and keeps class exciting. In Physics for Future Presidents he incorporates demonstrations throughout lecture, which are fun to watch. The tests all follow a similar format and if you read the book and attend lecture you have nothing to worry about. Comment: He's a funny, nice, approachable professor. But this class really isn't about him. Your grade is based solely on the labs and final project, during which your GSIs will be walking around helping you. The problem is the materials are very unorganized, and a lot of time goes into figuring out what you're supposed to do. On top of that, the material itself is just time consuming. Have fun!

Comment: Bob's a cool professor. Always willing to help you out and very enthusiastic. Although he tries to avoid math and stick to sense which might be annoying to some people. You can't blame him for the assignments because he didn't make them but they are notoriously painstaking. This year the short reports were all changed to lab notes so that saved a huge amount of time. He was extremely generous with the final project and the curve.

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
82 50 100 70 70

Comment: Most of 111 you really just need to figure out on your own in lab with help from the GSIs so lecture, while entertaining, is largely irrelevant. Fortunately it only meets about 1/3 of the time, most Tuesdays but essentially no Thursdays. In lab Bob is very helpful in asking thought-provoking questions and providing valuable counsel on the special project. It would have been nice if he had been around more, however he had a busy research schedule and was gone a lot for conferences. Grading for the course is sort of a black-box, do your best on everything and show that you care by spending the necessary time in lab and good things will happen.

PHYSICS 111 (Spring 2013)

Overall Assignments Exams Helpfulness Enthusiasm
87 50 100 59 67

Comment: Phy 111 is more about the lab than the professor. The class takes a lot of time, especially the first couple weeks. Some people would take the class for a couple weeks, do the lab reports, drop the class, then re-enroll the next semester and turn in the old lab reports. The labs get easier after transistors are introduced. There are two lab reports that require peer grading; what matters is your comments on OTHER lab reports, not the ones on your report. I didn't understand this properly the first time and got a D on my report. This ended up dropping me a letter grade in the class. Jacobsen is a really smart professor, but he is sort of a jerk sometimes, especially when he explains something poorly and expects you to believe it, or when he doesn't understand what you're saying and ends up saying the same thing in different words. All in all though, he is very helpful and knowledgeable about electronics, which is important for the final project. As far as daily lab activities go though, he barely comes to the lab, so most of the time you are interacting with the GSIs, not the professor.
